My laptop is really struggling
« on: May 13, 2016, 05:16:44 PM »
I figured I would ask some of the smart folks here on this forum about my laptop.   For about a week now it has really slowed down and is struggling.  In fact, it has gotten to the point at which I have to cold reboot several times a night just to keep it running--it gets "stuck" on different processes and I am not able to do anything with it other than turn it off with the on/off button, not even ctrl-alt-del.   Then after I turn it back on it usually takes about 4-5 minutes for it to get to the point at which I can start using it again.

I am going to see if I need to defrag it in the hope it might help my HDD be happier.... The laptop is about a year and a half old, running an intel i5-4210 processor with 8 GB RAM, a regular HDD (not SSD...) with 686 GB capacity of which 127 GB is shown to be used.    Any thoughts, ideas?   Thanks!

Virus, malware, etc. Run a virus and malware scan. Also look in task manager and see if there are processes that hogging resources.

Download ccleaner  aka crap cleaner.  This is a well respected program and free.  Install it, run analyze and then remove all the stuff if finds.  Unless you know how to tune up the defaults you will lose your history and maybe some auto logons for some web pages, but nothing serious.

Then run the registry cleaner part and let it remove all the stuff it finds.  It lets you save a backup of what it will be deleting, but in runing this on lots of customers and friends computers as well as my own, I have never had to go back and restore anything.  Now I don't even bother saving the restore file.

Be sure to download from the author site and not some download repository.  ie. http://www.piriform.com/

Doing all of what ya'll recommended.   Thanks so much!   Already seeing a big difference after running ADW & JRT. currently running cccleaner, then will look for viruses & malware.    I run virus checker every time I use this machine but I do not always look for malware because it takes MWB quite a well to do its thing and my machine slows down when it is running..

THANK YOU
