direction troubles on layout
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:20:17 PM »
I have 2 polyline models that are causing me trouble.  They were not playing right in real life compared to the preview.  I had built the bay window model differently in real life than the model so I tried to change the model to reflect where the real start corner was.  Now each segment appears right on the layout screen but in the model preview of the sequence the lights are confused (I think it draws it where it use to be but with the new updated number of nodes ... which pushes things out round the corners).  My garage door model is also having similar problems.  I was experimenting with this at the 2:35 mark.
Is there a way to update the sequence after you update the model? (I tried render and check sequence)
When it says starting location (left or right). What does this do? I thought it meant that if I drew the model from the left side of the screen towards the right but later determined that the lights went right to left I would just change this box.  It did not appear to work for me this way but by this point I was pretty confused.
Thanks for the help
Jean

Changing right to left just reverses the node order it doesn't change how they are drawn.  I opened your layout and I can't see a problem.

I re-downloaded the files i shared and tried restarting my computer.  Things still don't look right for me.
I have attached a couple of screen shots.  The bay window has 4 segments.  I drew the right segment first from bottom to top.  It is segment 1 (I have it highlighted in the screenshot).  So segment 2 should be the top (and I labelled it so).  Then if you move to the preview, I put an effect on segment2 (top) and 4(bottom).  It previews on the side [as seen in the other screen shot]. Not only that but it curls around the corner as my side piece has less pixels than my top/bottom.

And can I also clarify the starting location toggle a bit farther.  Should models always be set with Left (unless you wired your string the opposite way from the way you entered it in xlights).  This setting is just like the direction setting on the Falcon F16V2 and has no correlation to how it is drawn on the screen?

Thanks for the help.  It is really appreciated.
Jean

Ok I see what you mean.  I wasn't dropping effects at the strand level and that's where it shows up.  That's weird because at the model level the effects seem to work fine.

It looked like the named strand/node names on the polyline only account or the way it is originally drawn (left start location).  When that is changed to right, the segments on the layout tab are still shown for that orientation, but in the preview tab they take into account the changed orientation.

One way to get around that would be to use submodels for the top, bottom, left, and right, rather than trying to use the named strands (especially since this is only really 1 strand of lights).

I was at a loss for what to try next so thanks so much for the help to get me going.  I built 4 sub-models for my window.  I then decided to change the Start Location back to Left and use my falcon F16v2 to control string direction.  When I checked out my model at the strand level it was now working great ... but my sub-models were now messed up.  It appears that whatever Start Location you build your model in you should stick with.
Thanks, I am now able to move on and keep sequencing!
Happy Thanksgiving from Canada

Yes start location will change node numbering and sub-models use the node-numbering.  I tried to fix this issue but some of the internals of the program are still a mystery and I wasn't able to get anyone else to help.
