Anyone stream the music instead of FM? How?
« on: October 11, 2016, 09:46:58 AM »
Not sure if this is the right spot but would ask..  Does anyone use a streaming service or such to play their music over the internet instead of FM?  I am just thinking of all the folks that walk by with their phones but no radio.  Would be nice for them to listen.  But if you stream how does the syncing work?  Well  or bad?  Is that why everyone does FM and I have not heard of anyone streaming?  Would be looking to do it on the PI with FPP.

I use outdoor speakers for the folks that walk by (no phone required) - only play them loud enough to be heard to the street - no streaming required.  Also have FM transmitter for vehicle traffic.

I do the same thing, couple speakers outside that turn off with a timer 9:30. I know a few people who do online radio shows I could always ask them questions. But I think it would bring an unnecessary complexity

Well this is my first year ever trying to do an animated show (starting simple though).  I guess I was concerned the speakers would annoy neighbors but will give it a try and see if I can have it just loud enough to hear from street.

Be respectful with your speakers and you shouldn't have a problem. Most times the people in the cars turn the music up much louder than your speakers are ever going to be. Make a couple of announcement sequences about being courteous to your neighbors and other people trying to watch the show

I would think streaming would have a lag, even a small one would not go with sequencing? Other though would be if you streamed it over your wifi(less lag, but the listener would then be required to be on your wifi) too much for a walk by. Speakers are the way to go...

I have streamed music before and found a significant lag, also the lag time may change due to internet traffic/device/number of users.  My preference is just as others that have posted. I have speakers just low enough for those that get out of their vehicles but also broadcast.

An old boom box works great.  I have mine on the front porch and you really cannot hear it in the yard across the street.  Just play with the volume until it seems right and ask your neighbors to listen while you adjust the volume.  I do turn my volume up when I am out in the yard working on stuff during the day or watching a sequence for potential changes.
