Getting Started
« on: November 05, 2016, 04:06:25 AM »
I am looking to get started and I'd like some advice on a purchasing a basic starter setup. I am looking to outline 12 windows on my house to start and then expand my setup each year/holiday. The more research I do the more confused I am about which setup would be best for me. I'm sure there will be a bunch of options, but any advice is appreciated.

I have plenty of electronics and programming experience, so I'm up for a challenge!

TIA

For this year? I'd start with Falcon for a controller, pi for player, diyledexpress for pixels, xlights for programming, Google and YouTube for how to videos.

Some boards to start reading; this one, Falcon, DIY Christmas, and auschristmas lighting.

I agree with Dave, go with a Falcon controller:

I like bullet nodes over strips.  They are easier to work with, repair, etc.  Several vendors.  I recommend smart over dumb.

I outlined my windows using boscoyo strips http://www.boscoyostudio.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_6&products_id=2&zenid=fsi3dfpp42evf2pjmopqf3k3r3 for the sides, and top and bottom I used their trim http://www.boscoyostudio.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_6&products_id=43.  Some people use PVC.  See photos for what I did.  There are many ways to do, mine is just one of many.  You can get creative.

Sequencing/programming will take the longest, at least it does for me.  So, you need to start right away.
