Here is my Bruno made out of back lit coro. It's the programming the mouth movements that's a challenge. You need green to fill in the outside of the lips but yet black inside the mouth.  3 colors per different mouth movement. Short of pre set effects don't know of another way. The eyes have 5 closed, wink,center, right, and left.

First part i get, to keep the green outside of the lip movements is easy with render order. White lips over write the green. but how do I get the center of the mouth black? can you put in 2 states with the same name. or do I need to except the green center as my pix showes

Go into the model and checkout the options for creating the States.  I haven't looked there in a long time so I forget exactly what it looks like.  But I believe you create states where you define exactly what channels are going to be active for that state.  So whether you can create a state with a black lip is really in your hands with how you wired it up.  We can't make it do something unless it's already capable.  Then just drop the State effect and select your state or I believe you can create a timing track where you define the state changes.  I'd check the user manual.

I don't know if you really need the inside of the mouth to look black when it's open. That might look more odd than having the mouth all white. The main thing is to get the mouth movements in time with the words. Puppets look perfectly good pretending to talk and they pretty much have one mouth movement for all words (open and closed). The most important thing is to get the mouth moving with the syllables.
I've found that when i have accidentally not programmed my mouth movements properly and parts of the mouth look black, it really shows up the partitions that make the mouth parts and also looks like the lights aren't working.
Personally I just use the layer option to make the colour of the mouth parts not being used to match the surrounding head and have the open mouth parts all the one color (usually white). Personally I think it looks fine and is a relatively easy option.

edit: I remember when i first did Olaf, I tried using black for the open mouth movements and it just didn't look right so ended up using pale blue.

seeing your Olaf is what really inspired me to make him. He was a lot of work but I think he was worth it. I will now set the mouth up to the faces effect. Its good to hear advice from someone whos been there. Now I'm excited to get back to work.  Thanks.......
