3 Pin JST Plug
« on: December 23, 2016, 03:08:05 PM »
This year I built some Starbursts using the Porcupine ball from Cabella and 10/30 Strips as I thought these might work well since they are in the air. I connected each tube to the next using 3 Pin JST Plugs (see  Photo) as I felt this would make an easy connection so the tubes could be taken off the ball for storage.
I only put one of these out because I didn't have time to create the anchor wires for all three. We had a storm and part of the tubes no longer light. I feel it could be due to moisture to the JST plug or failure of the strips.
I am going to change to bullet pixels and I am wondering if I should consider using the JST connectors or use the normal 13.5 mm connectors that are used on everything else (I am tending to lean toward the 13.5mm Plug). I want the bullet pixels because in two years and extreme weather and a month of running the show each year I have not had any failures with the bullet pixel on either the Mega Tree or Matrix and these are the most exposed to weather and wind nor anything else that is using bullets. This year I just put everything out turned it on and it worked except for my arches which I eventually got working and they are working great.
I would like some opinions please.
Thank You
Kent

Living in up state New Your We get our share of nice weather (NOT) My whole show is strips and those connectors. when we get 2 to 3 days strait rain I end up with a few issues. this year 2 of those connectors. what I get is the strips just freeze in one pattern. plug in and out a few times and its back working. if it continues I just cut and hard wire. When the strip fails its usually somewhere in the middle of the strip. What I finding is a drop of water has gotten in somehow. If it caught quick a hair drier and a re seal all is needed. other wise I'm out cutting a chunk out and soldering in a new one. once the temps here got below 25 my lights have been running fine. I also next year going to redo my big mega tree to 24 wide and 80 tall bullets from the strips.

I did the same with my porcupine ball, but it has never made it outside.  They are problem matic the JST in real life outside, had to crawl up on the roof last night in the dark to do the JST wiggle to get my garage roof line going.

I say replace them once and not cry when they don't work where you cannot get at them.

I use JST plugs for several elements that will be easy to get to (on the ground or just a step ladder). I always add a drop of CorrosionX on the pins to stop galvanic corrosion of the pins since the Pos and Neg are so close to each other. If I do that, they work very well.

On the roof, connections use the round, threaded waterproof connectors.
