Does uDMX USB to DMX interface work or xLights
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:06:10 AM »
Hi Everyone
This is my first post on this forum and I'm a newbie to xLights. I have been playing round with DMX lighting and am becoming hooked on the potential of smart controllers. I have seen some great stuff done with xLights software on YouTube. I have a uDMX USB to DMX interface. Seems to work fine on QLC+ ( DMX software). Cant seem to get it working with xLights. I know that some DMX software doesn't work with uDMX
Two questions if I may
1) Does uDMX interface work with xLights
2) If answer to above is No, which USB to DMX interface should I buy and yes I know what a cheap interface uDMX is but its got me this far
Thanks in anticipation of your response

I haven't heard of uDMX so no idea if it can work.  Any idea what type of driver it uses?  Some USB devices appear as a COM port.

Is this it?  Looks like we would need to know the functional interface to all the calls in that DLL.  I'd have to look at the other interfaces we support but my suspicion is that it won't work without someone figuring out how to add code to interface with it.

Thanks Gilrock
I found this site to explain some of the uDMX architecture
http://www.anyma.ch/research/udmx/
It seems that it is unlikely to work so await with interest your recommendation for USB -> DMX interface.More than likely I graduate to use E1.31

I'm not the one to ask for USB hardware.

If you plan on doing E1.31 eventually why not jump the gun and do it now, instead of buying something like a USB to DMX dongle that you know will be collecting dust on a shelf in a short while. Even a 4 port E1.31 controller will output DMX and be more useful in the future.

Thanks for the link, I was looking for that info a while back when someone asked about uDMX support in FPP.  Now I can look at their code to see how much work it would be to add to FPP.

Thanks for advice. I think your absolutely right. I just need to make the jump to E1.31 controller.

Wish I had seen this before I bought uDMX dongle. Thanks I think that the E1.31 will in the long term be the best option for me
