Video Effect Quality on P10s
« on: December 21, 2016, 01:45:03 AM »
Hi all,

I've been trying to get a video working on my 7x7 P10 matrix for a while and am struggling. So it's a 224 x 112 matrix.

I can add the video effect and choose a 480p version of my video and it scales it and looks fine on the computer. Same if I choose a 1080p version of my video.

But when I go look at it in real life, it's terrible quality. Nothing like the preview. Any black backgrounds are full of artifacts. And the video looks like a super compressed picture.

Is there a simple way to change this for better quality? I created a 224x112 version of the video in Final Cut and that got rid of the artifacts from the black backgrounds. But still very compressed looking in real life.

So my hack for that was to use ffmpeg and - qscale:v 2 to get decent jpgs. Then I'm just using the picture effect to cycle those images. But then I stumbled on another issue, the picture effect seems to be limited to 9999 pictures. So I had to painfully find the point very 9999 ends in the sequence and add a new picture effect. And rename pictures 10,000-1200 back to 1-2000 to get the second picture effect to work.

So I thought I hacked together a solution. But it still looks very compressed and bad looking on the P10 in real life.

What am I missing?
Any suggestions?

For one you're probably standing too close.  You need to be far enough back that people mistake it for a TV because the pixels are blending together.  The leds in these panels are just not going to give you the quality you see on a computer screen.  I don't do any processing to the videos and I've been happy with it.

Hmmm. My minimum viewing distance is 100 ft. I feel like that's pretty reasonable. They blend together pretty well.

It just seems like there's something limiting them to only 6 bit color or something. There are very distinct lines where it goes from one color in the background to the next. Where it should be a smooth transition. I'll try to get a picture to better explain it.

I don't need to see a photo I have a big P10 panel.  The videos end up looking what I call stair stepped especially in the black areas.  But if it looks much better then we might as well just hang a TV out there.

I ended up adjusting the gamma curve on the P10 model in xLights to 1.5, and changed the brightness in FPP down to 5 (default is 7).  This helped my videos look better in the darker areas, but was not perfect.
