Any plans for manual update?
« on: January 24, 2017, 04:32:39 PM »
Hi, first off hats off to all the authors of the xlights manual.  One of the best I have seen.

Curious, if there are any future updates planned for the manual on the near horizon.

With all the constant changes, I know it can be difficult to keep track.

At anyrate, it is always appreciated when a new manual is released. I really enjoy learning about and hopefully understanding the new changes and or procedures.

On that thought, has there ever been a discussion of instead of completely redoing the manual each time, to update with addendums?

Thanks You,
David

Unfortunately our key author Gerry is no longer available but a week or so back a bunch of users volunteered to help so I would hope we will get an update some time in February.

The plan is to get the manual up to date with all of the new features since the last update in release 45.  After that we plan to migrate the manual over into Gitbook where any updates are published immediately for people to read or download.  When downloading a PDF from Gitbook, the cover, TOC and page numbers will automatically be created.

Right now it's a very time consuming process to gather all of the manual components and merge them all into a single document, let alone making the changes and additions.  We kind of hit a limit with Google Docs and the sheer size of the manual.  That's why we had to split it up into multiple documents and merge before a new release.

This is where the other volunteers are awesome, help adding new content in the absence of Gerry.  I have a hard enough time prepping the document for release once the content is added.  If anyone is interested in volunteering, contact Steve Giron to be added to group of manual authors.  I'm sure the other volunteers wouldn't mind.
