Usb dongle ID rather than port
« on: September 11, 2017, 06:24:50 AM »
Open DMX dongles have a unique identifier built into them that remains the same regardless of which usb port it is plugged into. Is there any chance that the identifier could be used rather than the port so that those who swap usb things around don't need to ensure they always use the same port

Aren't they assigned a COM port?  I have an Entec dongle but I forget if its OpenDmx but it seems to grab the same COM port no matter which USB port I use.

On a Windows PC, the Device Manager does store the unique DMX ID and Com port values. That is why it gets the same Com port on subsequent plug ins.  It can be edited, though, in Device Manager.

No idea if FPP or Debian store that info.

I didn't realise that the port followed the usb dongle. I've gone to the extent of marking cables to ports in the past. I just did a check with 1 of my open dmx dongle and it stayed on com port 4 for all 3 usb ports that I tried it on. You learn something new each day :D
