Number channels re Universe size
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:40:14 PM »
Hey All,

I use XL/NC for my effects, then export to HLS.  I have never output using XL/NC so I haven't fully set up my Renards in XL/NC....

Question about Universe/channel numbers.  When I first started into this, and being totally clueless, I set up some universes that were small (<510).  XL/NC allows me to select any number for a given universe but my controllers only give me the option of 510 or 512 channels/universe.

So, let's say Universe #5 has an actual channel count of 250 in XL/NC.  My controller for that universe is set to 510.... I'm in multicast.   Since I only have 250 channels in my sequence for universe 5 does the controller just use the first 250 and then skip (as XLights/Vixen/FPP Mapping column keeps a sequential channel count running) on to Universe 6 and place channel 251(from the running channel count) in universe 6 ?

I assume, since XL/NC makes it so easy to select any channel number, that I'm not confined to using 510/512 which causes me to split/share universes with different strings/elements.

Any clarification is appreciated....I think I've overthought this thing....  ::)

If you define a universe as 250 channels then xlights will only multicast out the 250 channels of data. If your controller is expecting 510 or 512 then it is down to the controller to decide what to do. It may assume zeroes or it may even crash.

Thanks for the response..... So, if I understand what you're saying I would be better off to continue that universe on another string and 'eat up' all 510 channels before going on (in XL) to the next universe?

Xlights does not care if you don't use all the channels you define. It will just fill them with zeroes.

Okay...thanks....  Filling with zeroes.....that makes sense.  I just got wrapped around the axle for a bit.....
