Need to switch pc's
« on: November 20, 2017, 10:50:54 PM »
Ok I know its probably on the forum here somewhere, but I don't have many hours to look for it. Last year I ran the show off my laptop, this year I have a pc with a i7 12gb mem. but running win7.pro. My laptop is running real slow, so I need to copy all my info for xlights from laptop over. What files do I need to move? I want to keep my whole layout and setup, and all..lol. Thanks

Don

Your show and media folders should have everything in them.  Copy both of those to the new machine, install xLights there and point to those folders.  Everything should load up.

so much in this copy..lol . Will the layout and house picture and all be in this folders? the folder in xlights for media has only an old sequence in it. bacisly xlight stuff in in one large folder with multi folders within. am I going to have to repoint each sequence and all to proper folder? its 8gb so I will be done with copying to usb drive any minute now... Sorry if this seems dumb...so much work in there. also under main folder is backup folder I run a raid drive and I have mirror copy of everything on laptop, but I remember doing something similar with lor and had to make user and folders same as when was sequenced. If anyone has any more pointers probably just going to move the files tonight not too sure if going to mess with seeing if it all works yet.. Thanks

Should all be there.  If you saved pictures or things like data layers from imports in other folders it will tell you when you try to render one of those sequences that it is missing the file or can't find it.  You may need to remap some music paths but it will tell you that when you open a sequence, but honestly, if you move over and point to the new folders it should be fine.

I'd make a copy on the other machine and test before you delete anything on the old machine.  See if everything works before you do any deletes.

There are a number of ways to do that but the best way is to just move over the xml of the sequence you just edited.

I do this all differently though.  I use a file sync service similar to Onedrive, Google Drive, Dropbox...etc...to sync my show files between different computers.  This way I never need to manually copy anything between them.
