Total noob needs direction
« on: January 25, 2019, 11:33:39 AM »
Hello. I've been looking to start a display for a few months on and off and am slowly gathering information piecemeal. I have a design background, but virtually no tech skills. I think I see enough to info to learn the software, I just can't seem to find a place that tells you in detail what hardware I need and how to put it together. I would like to find something that can give me a glossary for total dumb dumbs(i.e. what is a "universe")  I am pretty good with my hands and feel like I could solder and build what is necessary, as long as someone tells me what to do. I would like to get to a place with a few window frames a mega tree, and video projection. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Go to Auschristmaslighting and download their 101 manual. Also check out canispater Christmas YouTube channel.

First of all welcome.   I'm in Rochester, New York. And why do I say that if you let us know where you live someone may step up and give you a walk through of their set up. I personally have done a few each year now for the past 3. I have one gentleman out of Cananda we email everyday, teaching things. As it comes to universes I never used them I do everything in absolute it's just easier for me.  I started with Xlights/Nutcracker almost 5 years ago with out anything before that. So I was not set in my ways yet... Lol..

Thank you all for your responses. Thanks keithsw1111 for the recommendations. I did previously discover canispater christmas which is great, but those videos are all little nuggets and not too comprehensive. Most that I have watched seemed to be for the experienced. QldKing- who is Keith? is there a youtube link? babybear- thanks for your kind welcome! It's good to know y'all are out there. If you couldn't guess by the name I'm in Brooklyn. I of course don't have much space in front, but it is a brownstone so there is plenty to work with vertically! I have ideas for the props I'd like to create, but don't know where to go with it (technically speaking). Maybe it's better to sketch out the plan first and then ask questions on how to do it?

There are no magic videos that show you how to do everything.  We all got our displays to where they are picking up a little knowledge here and there along the way it didn't happen overnight watching a YouTube video.  When I started I just searched for things and when I saw something I liked I tried to copy it.
