From my standpoint - you don't.  But the answer to your question would be by the use of the track timing.  If you try to do beat tracks you will have a huge timing file.  I think of nutcracker as lighting effects and not flashing lights in time to music.  That has made it much easier for me.
There are times when I also would not mind having a beat time showing on an element or two, but if you want that I think you will have to do that with another sequencer and then import into XL/NC to add effects to other elements of the display.  Just my $.02, YMMV

Just a bunch of colored lights that get boring in a hurry unless you can find a way to sync with the music..... Reminds me of going to a fireworks to music display.....You have music.....you have fireworks.....and I find those displays incredibly boring....like a guy playing music who has no sense of where the beat is..... For a musician that's the ultimate turn off.....well with the exception of intonation and singing on key.....  ;)

the answer is
1) Put rows in the grid with timing marks. The easiest way is to get a file created from audacity with timing marks. Bars, beats can be created.
2) Next add columns, one for each model you have. Use "Display Elements"in NUTCRACKER tab to add models.
3) Add effects for a model and for a time.
4) Press save to render it all together.

I agree...this is the way to go.... Takes a bit more time but the results are gratifying..... This is head and shoulders above just throwing up patterns of colors.... It gives some sense of 'beat'.....and 'feel' of music and lights working as 1....
