sorting of models in model list pop up window
« on: December 06, 2014, 11:52:49 PM »
Started creating some models tonight and notice that they don't sort in DMX channel order. I'm sure it is just my OCD flaring up again, but seems that would be the way most would want it. DMX 1-17 are grouped together because of their proximity to the controller, so at least the way I think I want them in DMX order together and not spread out alphabetically. Since I didn't have too many to change, I added the DMX channel to the beginning which works until you get past channel 9. When it sorts by number, it does so by the digit not in numerical order as I would have expected. (ie. 1, 10, 11, 100, 109, 2 . . .)

Just an observation and suggestion for a future release.

Wait until you get multiple universes and the channels for a given model span more than one universe.

Just name your models as needed.

I like alphabetical...  i think nutcracker is great at keeping things abstract so that most of your work doesn't necessitate knowing channel numbers.

Also, I have elements (coroflakes, arches, panels, etc.) that exist in all universes.  I tend to dedicate a universe by the location in the display -- right side is #1, right-center is #2, etc.  Since I like having them grouped together in the dialog screen so that i can quickly select them to create my runs of arches, runs of coroflakes, etc.

I see your point, guess I just have done LOR for so long that's the way I picture it now. Guess its time to broaden myself a little more by doing the same thing with an element name.

Thanks for the advise,
Brian

If you want a list to your liking you can use the export models to csv and then open that file in excel, sort it how you want it and print it out.  I have done that and sorted by start channel in order to double check my models against my excel planning sheet.

Your only other solution would be to put the start channel with leading zeros at the beginning of your model name.  I had similar issues when I named my windows as WL, WR, WCL, and WCR.  I want my window models in order from left to right so I went back and renamed my windows W1-L, W2-CL, W3-CR, W4-R.

Pick our poison so to speak.
