Is there a way we can still use the show director with xlights?

I have no idea how it works.  What file types can it play?  If xLights can produce that file type then that answers the question.

There is a wizard in light o rama that converts the sequence to a format it can read... I'll see if I can find the file extension on the sd card if it has one.

FPP on a Raspberry Pi is basically the replacement for the show director.     I'd recommend going that direction.
