Can you replace all of one effect for another in the row

Try using the select effect tool.

Thanks need a little more info can't find select effects tool?

From within xlights view / windows / select effect.
Once you have that window open you can select the effect type and model as well as start and end times using the select all buttons you can highlight the effects you want and then change them in the effect setting window.
