Can I use run XL/NC files on Windows machine if setup on a MAC?
« on: December 26, 2014, 10:01:54 AM »
I am planning to get an Apple Mac this spring and do my XL/NC stuff in the Apple OS X.   I am planning to use a spare Windows PC to run the display, but I realized this might be problematic.  Can I do all my XL/NC stuff on a MAC then run my display with those files from a Windows PC?  Thanks!!

You have a few options available to you, what you are thinking about is possible, but not the only option

Option 1
 - use xlights from Dan's site - http://dankulp.com/xlights/?C=M;O=D
 - sequence away on the mac
 - save resulting xml/mp3/xseq files on a usb key
 - move over to Windows PC and open the xml/mp3/xseq files and set up your schedule and run

Option 2
 - load up bootcamp, install xlights on the windows bootcamp, sequence and schedule from there

Option 3
 - sequence on the mac
 - run the show from a raspberry pi

Option 4 (???)
 - sequence on the mac
 - install some linux OS on the windows PC, install FPP and run the show that way

Thanks DrLucas--my "paradigm" for next year (I need to have capability to remotely control the display, and I don't know how to do that with the PI....) is to go with Option 1--that is really what I was trying to ask.   I really appreciate the info!!   What you showed is precisely what I wanted to do--sequence on Mac then transfer files to PC and run display using XL/NC from PC...

The FalconPi player was one of the best additions to my show.

The hardware is very inexpensive and takes about 1 hour from setup to running lights.
2  Tips - Enable output to lights and setup the network settings EXACTLY how you have them in Nutcracker.
The rest is self explanatory.

For me, running my show on a boat, and having the ability to control the show from a cell phone, or tablet via WIFI was incredible.   I had multiple playlists and having the ability to quickly switch from one playlist to another was very simple even while driving a boat in the dark, holding a cup of coffee and a cellphone.  I imagine it's much easier on terra-firma.

Cheers,

Thanks for the response, Steve!!  I appreciate the info.   I have a PI but I just haven't made the time to figure out how to use it.  Sounds like I need to go ahead & learn how to use it as my display PC!!  Especially if it's easy to control remotely via WIFI.

So far, no single change to my display has impressed my visitors more than being able to control the playlist from my Smartphone and put their names across my matrix using Matrix Tools.

They think that I am a magician. Ha!

(that, and having a version of "Let it Go")
I've noticed that even 14 year old girls will actually STOP texting on their phones to watch and sing along. Incredible.
