Jumping into Xlights head first from 15 years of LOR...HELP!
« on: August 14, 2023, 03:12:24 PM »
So - LOR released S6 and I've had enough - time to jump ship to Xlights. I have dozens of sequences that need to be ported over and I think I understand that process. These sequences are all AC/single channel per prop. I've never tried to use pixels in a show, but I've managed to collect over 30,000 WS2811/WS2801 pixels and built dozens of props over the past eight years in anticipation of adding them but didn't (and still don't) know how. Been too embarrassed to ask for help, but I'm not making much progress on my own and am anxious to add these pixel props and effects.
So now I'm asking.
But first, I have to get my LOR/DMX controllers configured and the sequences imported because I believe they'll give me some kind of temporal reference point on the Xlights timeline for adding "effects".

My current issue is with how to get eighteen 16 ch standard AC LOR controllers (which will be run DMX vice LOR), twelve 27 ch and twelve 3 ch DMX LOR controllers all connected. These in addition to one HolidayCoro Flex (with 12 differential receivers), three AlphaPix 16's, one HinksPro, three Sans_E682s and five Sans_E6804's.

What I have read is that it is preferable to connect the serial DMX boards to serial ports on the E131 boards. Makes sense, but how is this set up in the Controllers tab in Xlights? Each of the AlphaPix boards has 16 SPI outputs and 3 (allegedly independent of the SPI channels) serial outs. Can I connect the various LOR boards directly to them? Can I distribute these serial board connections amongst the E131 boards that have serial ports (I'm assume each port used has to be a separate Universe...or???).

Also assuming that once this is set up correctly, all  I have to do is set the appropriate start channel on the various AC and 12V pixel prop models.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably best to find the xLights Zoom room for all the controller setup questions.  I wrote a lot of the support for using the LOR controllers with the new Enhanced protocol but that was before the Visualizer was created.  So I'm not sure if we have support to automatically drop controllers in and have them configure properly or not for these LOR controllers daisy chained on a DMX output of another controller.

You've taken the tough first step to admitting you have CLAP hoarder syndrome. Now just follow up and do one thing at a time until the problems are cleaned up.

What do you think you will use for the player when running the new network? I ask because it influences different ways to approach your how do I "connect all these dmx problem"?

I run a few DMX props off my alphapix. I did have to figure out correct wiring but it was pretty easy once I got past that. In xLights, I did 16 universes for the 16 ports (was easier for me to think of it that way at the time) and then added a 17th universe for the DMX stuff. I haven't used it with the visualizer (which is pretty slick when it works). I just now opened up 2023.11 and dragged some stuff around in the visualizer including assigning some props to the dmx port and all is good. The visualizer is good tool for laying out your props.
