dumb LED modelling.......
« on: August 13, 2015, 11:30:10 AM »
Hi First time poster and from UK... So please be gentle....

Bit of background before the question..
I have run a Christmas show and a small Halloween display for a few years now utilising DMX and a self written controlling program.  I have made up many "silhouette" using multiple LEDs of various colours.
These have been running from dmx LED dimmers (PIC based) and 12vDC supplies.

Due to remodelling the front garden (Cut down the centrepiece tree as i couldn't see out the windows!!) I have had to consider a redesign but haven't enough time to do so this year.

I have now started toying with XLights (Wish i had seen this a while ago!!) as i eventually want to increase my channel count and display, and am transferring everything over but having a slight issue with the models..

For example I have a tree silhouette with 3 legs with 6 sets of lights on each leg.  They are running as a 6 channel tree with 2 red, 2 Green and 2 Blue sections (ie Red, Green, Blue, Red, Green, Blue from top down.)
i would like to model this as close as possible but having issues getting 3 different colours in the model..
As each section is a single (but different) colour I cant really use RGB in the model, and use of LED String gives all channels the same colour.
I have done it using single colour and modelled each section as a different channel and it does what it should, but all segments will display as that same colour.....
I know this doesn't matter to the overall Real world display, but would like to model as close as poss..

Is there a way to get separate colours into the modelling, ie each of the sub channels within the model can be different colours, or do I just have to accept as is....

Many thanks in anticipation....

Hello Steamy, welcome to the land of xLights/Nutcracker.

Your best bet will be to make 3 custom models.  One each for R,G,B. Define the node types as single color Red, Green, Blue as appropriate.

Once you have the 3 models, create a model group and include the 3 models in the group. Place the models in the layout screen so they overlap each other as shown in the attached image. (I did not draw all 6 sets of lights)

Apply your effects to the model group and the colors will show appropriately.

Hi Steve

Just a quick follow up.
That suggestion has achieved that which I needed to do.

Many thanks.
