Crash on adding Groups Xlight 2016-17
« on: April 03, 2016, 07:52:33 PM »
Hi

First I want to thank you for all your hard work.

I have a problems that is repeatable    I am creating groups and when I add some items to the group it will crash when I click OK

I can add the items alone as a group but we I combine them is causes in problem.

I have a group called GP Arches which as my 4 Arches I also have a group called GP Fans and they work fine.  When I try to create a ground called GP Arches and Fans and add the 8 items it crashes.

The same occurs on my mini Trees   I have a Group call GP MiniTree All and that worked but when I try  create a subset of this group call GP MiniTree Fence which as 4 items that are already in the GP MiniTree all the program crashes

What additional information should I provide?

post your xlights_rgbeffects.xml file. A short video of what you are doing always helps us.

You should also include the crash log.

I noticed the same problem last night when adding groups, I was able to add some  models in some groups and the same models would not go into other groups, it would crash when I clicked ok.
Thanks

Sean, I have been having the same trouble. When adding additional models to the wholehouse xlights crashes. No big deal the program is still great.

I'm also experiencing this issue.  This is what I did when it occurred:

I created a new group in 2016.17.

Then I created a new model which has some of the same channels as an existing model (done intentionally).

When I try to add the model to the group I get a crash every time.

I can post my crash log / XML files if needed.

EDIT:
I just created a similar group and a similar model and did NOT get a crash when I added the model to the group.

The only real difference that I can see is the length of the model names.  The ones that crashed had longer names.  I think I remember another post about someone having an issue with a long name, but can't remember where I saw it.  Here are the names I used if it might help:

Crashed:
Group name: C-Cane Spinner-L-GRP  Model name: C-Cane Spinner-L-01

Did NOT crash:
Group name: CaneArch1-GRP            Model name: CaneArch 1-01

You should always post those files.

I can't find it right now, but Sean posted a few weeks ago on what exactly to include for bugs. The logs and xml files should be automatic.

What to provide on crashes:

1) ALWAYS provide detailed description of what you were doing. If it is not repeatable, we probably cant do anything. If you can cause the crash over and over, describe your steps.
2) Tell us the version of xlights you are running.
3) Provide crash files. If you get the crash dump (Example: xLights_dbgrpt-23396-20151119T092711.zip) that has the files we need. If you get a crash with the dump then please provide
xlights_rgbeffects.xml
{YOUR_SEQUENCE}.xml , if you have one
DO NOT give us any fseq files, those are of no use to us and they are huge.
4) EXTRA BONUS: Please do a screen capture (screen-cast-o-matic  or jing, both are free) with 30-60 seconds of the steps you do to cause the crash.

Nice info for reporting crashes but in this instance I believe Dan has already fixed the bug with model groups.

I reported this and my bug report yesterday in the help section of the forum.  I will download screencast o matic and record the issue next time if it helps.  Unless the fix is yet to be released, I will wait and appreciate your attentiveness.   I didn't know others were having this issue until today.
Thanks.

Yes... was planning to upload the files but was on a different PC at the time & didn't have access to the crash files.  I'll always upload the files in the future if I have any issues.   ;)
