Cleaning up my xseq files
« on: September 14, 2014, 06:53:06 PM »
I would like to clean up my xseq files so only a few show up in the NC drop down box.  I wanted to see how others manage their xl/nc files.  I tried to set one of my xseq files in a folder last night then I couldn't get xl/nc to find it so I moved it back into the xl/nc directory, after which all is well.  Thanks in advance.  I want to make sure I don't goof up the file structure and blow up anything!!!!

are you doing "File,Backup"? please do this at least once when you are editinh sequences. Your entire work will be backed up into the backup subdirectory. if you screw something up, you can get it back if you have that backup directory.

xlights will only look in your show directory for music files and xseq files. if you have extra things, just move them out of your show directory

Sean talked about this in one of the videos.  You can change the xlight directory very quickly.  But there is one caveat of course.  Make several directory to use with xl such as test and show or christmas and halloween or christmas test, christmas production, etc.  Copy items where you want them.  Maybe even one for things you downloaded and want to try or one for archiving last years stuff.  The caveat is that you must have the same xlights_etc.xml files in each folder and if you make a change you need to copy the appropriate file to every folder again.

jim is correct. you can have multiple show directories. it takes just a few seconds to switch.

suppose i have a halloween directory, i am working it now. i add new hardware, models .etc. Those changes will not be seen in the christmas directory unless i copy
xlights_rgbeffects.xml (This contains Models, Palettes)
xlights_networks.xml  (This contains the SETUP info)

Wow.   Really great to know.  Sorry to be asking something you have already presented on a video, Sean.  This is perfect timing for me because I just started setting up a display at a second location and I could stand to separate out the sequences by location.  I will also go ahead & setup a 2014 directory or something like that.  I appreciate the info!!!!
