animation time length
« on: December 03, 2016, 07:47:54 AM »
Hi
Is there a way to make the time line on an animated sequence longer than the 35 seconds or so that it defaults to?
Thanks

I am on a mac but if you click on the gear for sequence settings you should be able to change the duration from there.

What is the "max" length for a sequence in xlights?

I have done 15 minutes with no problems. Have heard anything over 20 minutes messes up but that was last season. There really is no reason to go that long as in your play list just stack as many sequences together as you want. I will say to write be creative enough to fill a long sequence is a challenge. If you start with 2 or 3 short 3 to 4 minutes one and then get those playing and each night add to them. With out music any effect that runs longer that 30 seconds you will lose the interest of the viewer. My last years show.

I see your first post, Well let me welcome you to Xlights.

The "max" length varies.  You will be limited by the OS you are using, the number of channels in the sequence, and the duration of the sequence.  Mac build is 64bit so you can go a lot longer.  In Windows its a 32-bit process so with the build flags we use it will be limited at 3gig of memory for the process so the more channels you have the shorter duration before it will run out of memory and crash.

Thanks...I am only running the "show" on Fridays.  The rest of the nights I just want the lights on from about 4 till 9.  So in my mind the simplest way to do this would be to make a sequence that is 5 hours long...nothing fancy except for the fade to off the last 5 seconds.  I am experimenting with a couple of different setups - including running a 15 sequence multiple times in a playlist or running a playlist multiple times on the schedule.

The simplest solution is to make short sequences, add them to a playlist and schedule the playlist to repeat.  Long sequences are problematic.

And I wanted to hear how bad a 5 hour sequence crashes the program. :)

That's just your diabolical nature, but we love it.  Sorry to spoil your fun.

Thanks all.  For the week nights, I have made a 30 second sequence with another that is 30 sec with a final fade out.  For the show (show is only 10 minutes long and I want it to play on the hour on Fridays at 6,7, &8), I have created a couple of sequences - 2 1 hr sequences (one with a fade and another without) and then a 50 "filler" with a fade.  This is working perfectly.

Again thanks for all the help, we are in business as they say.
