ArtNet issue
« on: February 15, 2017, 04:51:20 PM »
Hi gentle folk

I am new to both XLights and the setup so it may be a simple issue I haven't got my head around.

When I started out I set up a simple one string of 170 WS2801 pixels using DMX which I am really totally across but knowing that I only had 512 channels to map out it wouldn't be long before something bigger was required

So on eBay I found an ArtNet 6 universe controller and thought that was a good start to control 3072 channels
So I plugged it in and set up the unit and nothing at all so after some emails to the vendor regarding the issue he came up with some net and subnet figures and we got it working ok.
So there is the history the question?

Why does XLights have a problem communicating on the standard address of net 0 subnet 0 universe 1
Has the correct protocol for ArtNet been followed as it just cannot accept these figures and work

Sorry for the long first post but I have been confused by this

As a footnote I'm from the UK and from what I've seen you guys rock when it comes to setups I haven't got past blinks string yet. Maybe when I retire in 17 years I'll have time to play properly.

I am not sure. Can you tell me more about what is wrong in our artnet packets that is obviously ok in other universe settings?

Gotta start with the basics.   Did you turn on Output To Lights icon?

Ok here is the technical info

Yes I turned output to lights on  ;D

So to get 6 ArtNet universes working  we have set the following in the ArtNet device

Universe 0  network 10 (0A) Subnet/ universe 161(A1)  which in the software shows up as network 10 subnet 10 universe 1.  Universe only tab = 2721

Universe 1  network 0  (00) subnet/universe 18(12)  software network 0 subnet 1 universe 2 universe only tab = 18
Universe 2 net 0 sub/ universe 19(13)  software net0 sub 1 universe 3 universe only =19

I could add the final 3 universes if needed
Do I totally understand the info above Nope, but if I changed the setting of universe 0 to network 0 then nothing works but its fine on universe 1 to 5

Ok we'll probably need to wait for Keith to reply since he wrote the ArtNet functions.  I could probably figure it out but I'd need to read the standard and inspect the code so lets give time for Keith to respond.

I didn't see you list which version of xLights you are using.  That's useful because we are fixing bugs all the time.  I remember a recent bug where there was an "off by 1" error for the outputs when that code was refactored so it could be that if you haven't upgraded to the latest.

hi Sorry for missing out the version of XLights

I'm using the mac version 2016.53

Wouldn't it be great if someone created an ArtNet universe calculator so people. Like me could understand it a little more clearly

It would be useful to know if the issue still exists in 2017.3 as this code was changed but the calculation concerned wasn't changed deliberately. I will look into it over the weekend.

Ok so i'm now running 2017.3 i reverted back to standard settings for Art net so Network 0 subnet 0 and universe 1 and it is not functioning. i set it back to the figures stated previously shown and all is good.

a strange problem indeed

i have attached a snapshot of the controller port settings and the Xlights setup

I am looking at the calculations and i dont see a problem with them.

You say it works on 10/10/1 but not on 0/0/1 ... do you know if your controller ever works on 0/0/1 with say glediator or some other artnet issuing software?

Hi Keith

I worked without any issues on QLC+ but this is the only other software tried.

I don't have a problem setting it up as is is, I was hoping we could figure out why it is  a problem it could be the ArtNet units setup.

Thanks

Hi Keith

How can I help with information it would be nice to get an answer to what could be wrong, could it be a device error or coding of it.

It could be. I retread through everything above and I am somewhat confused about things. You did get it working with one set of settings. What were they on both sides.

Then the ones that didn't work. What were they on both sides.

The I think you got those same settings working from another program. What did you set that up as.

If all that is true then I will get you to do a packet capture.

Basically the plan has to be to show it works with some other software but not with XLights. That proves it is XLights. If we can't do that it is likely the device.

Hi Keith

I'll go through all the settings and do screen capture of QLC+ setting and the ArtNet port setting I will also set upXlights on the standard settings and see if anything has changed.

I will contact the vendor of the unit and ask him if he knows what was causing the issue and how he got the setting that worked

It will be over the weekend
