Yeah that's almost it.
You would run the wire from the power source (with a fuse) out to your lights and the best place to connect it would be at the end of the strip where you have the most power loss.
When you reduce the load on the first wire the voltage will come up. For the power the thicker the wire the better.
I think a lot of lamp cord is 18 gauge if you can find something 16 gauge it would be better.
Keep in mind the Gage of the wire isn't the only Factor the shorter you can keep your runs of wire the better.
Now that you have the voltmeter you can try a few things out and see what's going on. You can also use it to confirm your positive and negative before you make your connections.

Ok help me out here.  I'm setting up my lights outside.  So far I have 200 nodes on each ½ of my roof.  Each section I add I test. There is only one power feed so far but yet working just fine.   I'm only using 16gauge wire at 20 feet. You say your having issues. I have yet to hear what the issues are.  Dimming when getting to the end. A red glow. Flickering. Each one is for a different reason.

Go back a page and read what he put down, he has a lot of resistance in the extension wire that he's using is ending up with only 10 volts at the beginning of his strip.  Plus I think he's using strips not nodes .

Ok.... At the beginning my sequnce is pretty simple.  It goes on and off with the color purple and the only prob i see is couple lights at the end of the strand will flicker a different color. Now the prob arises when the part where the whole house goes white.   This makes the lights stay on and will not turn off even when i stop the sequence.  I got to unplug it to turn it off and replug it.   Now when i run it wout the extension no problems occur.
And as info... Im running 12v flat back C9s.  25ft extensions.  Li Hhuu ts from RayRu and extensions from wowlights.
