xlights install problem
« on: October 25, 2017, 10:52:19 AM »
Had to install new copy of xlights 2017.30 onto a new laptop, due to old one dying.  It appears to install  fine, but at the end i get the following errors:  Unable to create directory! Backup Failed.  Close that, then this comes up :  Directory 'C:\Program Files(X86)\xlights\backup\2017-10-25-114456_OnStart' could'nt be created.  (error 5: access is denied).  Have tried the install process numerous times with the same results except for the six numbers before OnStart .  Any help wold be gratefully appreciated.

Looks like you set your Show directory to where xLights is installed.  You should never use the program files area for user documents.  The problem is you need administrator rights to write to that directory.  You will probably need to start xLights as Adminstrator to get past this and then change your Show directory to somewhere else.  By the way you really should install 2017.33 instead to fix all the crashes found since .30.

Also I'm pretty sure the installer is not causing that.  You are getting a question at the end about whether you want to run the program and are probably choosing Yes.  So its the running of xLights that is doing the backup not the installer.  You don't need to install again just run the program as Admin or you will need to clear out your registry for xLights.  I don't have those instructions.

I think you can just run xlights ..: ignore the backup error and then set your show directory to a new directory you create in your documents folder.

Thanks for the help.  Created the folder in documents as suggested and installed 2017.33.  Absolutely no problems with the install.  Now to proceed with relatively simple job of recreating all of my previous work!!!!
Thanks again.

You shouldn't need to recreate anything.  All the files you need should be sitting in the old folder.  Just copy the contents to the new show folder.
