Newbie Channel question
« on: February 06, 2018, 06:37:08 PM »
I am making progress with my Xlights setup thanks to all of you!
I am having to unlearn a lot of stuff, but I am really liking the Xlights setup.

So here is my question!

I am using the method of assigning channels to models by using the last channel of the element before it.  I cannot remember the name right now.

If an element spans 2-510 channel universes do you manually have to make the corrections or is Xlights supposed to do it?

Ex.  I have an element that is 333 channels.  I then have 4 elements each 78 nodes for a total of 306 channels.
Do I need to split these into 2 universes manually or will the software?

Thank for the help!

Tractormike.

You don't need to worry about it.  Just remember all the channels inside xLights are really just one big block.  They only get broken into universes if xLights is used to transmit the data to controllers.  Even when we write out to an FSEQ file there are still no universes involved.  An FSEQ file has no universe information.  It's up to the player like an FPP to be configured to know which offsets into that data block to use for grabbing information for each universe.

What Gil says is true but if you have multiple controllers then you will need to break the chains as generally a universe can only go to one controller.

Yep that's how I do mine also.  Generally you usually know which controller you are going to run your models on so set the first model and daisy chain the rest...on a per controller basis.

This information helps and confuses:)

Let me give you some more information!

I am using Xlights and a Falcon V3 with 2 differential boards.

my elements are on ports 22 and 23.

I have identified the models to follow and which controller/port the strings are connected too.
When I went to test, everything did not work as expected.  My model with 333 channels worked fine and only first part of my second model worked.
When I broke up the link to the prior model and told it to use another universe everything started working.

I am just trying to figure out if I did something wrong or if I am misunderstanding.

BTW, thanks for the replies!  it is very helpful.

To be honest it drives me crazy trying to read some text description of how you have channels hooked up.  Just show screenshots if you want help.  And to head off which screenshots do we need to see.  All of them that are related to the setup and configuration of those model channels in xLights and Falcon.

There are several videos available which cover best practice ways to configure xLights and falcons.
