Recording MADRIX with xCapture?
« on: April 17, 2018, 08:11:50 PM »
Can someone explain to me a workable method for recording MADRIX output using xCapture? In the xCapture window, it states "Note: Will not record locally generated Multicast or 127.0.0.1 traffic.". Now, MADRIX does not support sACN Unicasting - its Multicast or ArtNet. I tried anyways, using E1.31/sACN, and got no data when I tried to capture All. I also set up some ArtNet outputs, but couldn't get anything there either. During this time, I am viewing the DMX Watcher in MADRIX and noting that there is channel data all over the place. And to be explicit, yes, I have my key in.

I feel like I'm just missing something basic, here. I've watched Keith's videos on xCapture, but he kinda jumps straight to xCapture & glediator and the recording of data without showing any configuration settings within glediator. He also mentioned "MADRIX users" as people who can make use of xCapture, so I'd enjoy finding what I'm doing wrong. Any guidance would be mucho gusto! Thanks!

If your pcs up address is 192.168.0.34 then setup Madrid to unicast the art net or sacn data to that up address. And all should be good.

Bizarre, I still have nothing. Attached are some screenshots of my MADRIX configuration, and my xCapture window, which is pretty empty. Note that in xCapture I've tried E1.31, ArtNet, and both at the same time (boxes checked), and have tried to Start & Stop numerous times with no apparent change or receipt of data.

In the MADRIX configuration, my IP 192.168.1.124 is my wlan adapter, and 192.168.1.169 is my eth adapter. I tried both IPs for both the ArtNet settings and the sACN settings, to no effect.

It’s hard to say. One one screen it looks to me like you sacn is multicast but on the other maybe unicast. Art net looks even stranger.

It is also possible the 2 active network adapters are confusing it.

What I would do is run wire shark and verify that the data is there and what ip Madrix is sending it to.

I will do that and report back if I learn anything. To be clear, MADRIX only supports Multicast E1.31/sACN, there is no Unicast support - it is just referring in the picture you are likely referring to, to the adapter to Multicast through.

No unicast support. That’s surprising. I may need to do some work to get multicast working. I was struggling at home because my router doesn’t broadcast multicast packets.

I'm having the same issue. Sending artnet to my computer's IP. It's a little funky - when I sniff the packets with Wireshark, I don't see the artnet data, but with the Artnetominator (https://www.lightjams.com/artnetominator/) I see everything. When I set up the streaming ACN, I can see the packets going to their default IP ( from my computer's IP (2.0.0.0.1) I'm no network genius, just an artist that's tired of leaving my laptop and $3000 usb stick around in my sculptures, ha...

I've tried to send the artnet data to another PC's IP, but had no luck this way either.

Will update you both if I find any workarounds. Can't wait to record this gd Madrix ouput...

Keith,

I've confirmed in Wireshark that I am indeed seeing all the E1.31 packets being cast. Attached are a couple screenshots, one from WS to show the network traffic, and another from MADRIX to confirm that I have that adapter set as my broadcasting address, plus confirming the DMX traffic via the DMX Watcher. In the MARIX screenshot, I don't have the adapter dropdown list expanded, but I did disable all other network devices other than my enet adapter, to avoid any potential issues or conflicts there. Unfortunately, I still have not been able to successfully record any data through xCapture.

If there is anything else I can provide that would be of use to you when you have time to investigate, please let me know. Full Wireshark capture logs, maybe, or anything else. Thanks, Keith!!

You're good, man! You do a lot for the community, take your time with it - I just want to facilitate you as best I can in the meantime, so you're not spending any time spinning your wheels like I do. Benlights was just telling me about the mini this weekend, I wish we had one closer to Kansas City. - I hope ya'll have fun!  8) 8) 8)

So, I haven't verified this by uploading to the Falcon Player and running, but I believe I managed to capture Madrix artnet packets by routing them to another machine running xLights. I'll update when I have some time later this evening to do it. If you have a network switch, a couple ethernet cables, and another PC laying around, it might be nice to try while we suss out a one-computer option.

I had wondered if this wasn't what was required of me to begin with, once I first saw that "Note: Will not record locally generated Multicast or 127.0.0.1 traffic." label on the xCapture window. But I convinced myself this couldn't be the case, given how Keith was showing it in his tutorial video, using Glediator.

I'll have to set up my old laptop and see what I can tease out here in the meantime. Thanks for the update!

Exactly my thoughts. This was just my quick workaround.

I have made a bunch of changes for .12 which hopefully solves these problems.
