FPP vs Xschedule
« on: August 11, 2018, 11:27:36 AM »
There is a schedule function in FPP and there is the XSchedule program and I am not sure why you would need XSchedule. Could someone explain the differences and benefits of each?

Thanks

There are many (as I found at the Expo) who want to drive their show from a computer, not a Pi or BBB. Having attended the xSchedule class, there are some features it has that may never make it into FPP.

Pretty simple - dedicate a computer or dedicate a PI.  Your choice.

Has anyone put together a chart with both of them listed, all the functions listed, and then which one, or both, that does that function?

No al. Mostly because such lists tend to be arbitrary or biased. Reality is for the basics they both do pretty much everything just slightly differently. At the edge there are clear differences. And there are a handful of things that each does that the other will never do.

I can understand this being the case on some issues.  I come from a world where we only list facts in comparisons of this nature. It is a priority to NOT let bias get into the listing.

Perhaps I just found something to fill my Wednesday afternoon "down time".

a table of comparisons would be nice.

here will get you started
same
both can be controlled by your phone
both can act as either a FPP remote or master
both can be configured through a web page

differences
rpi can drive 250K channels, laptop can drive over 1 million
rpm (sep zero) uses way less power. rpi good for battery operation of scheduler
more external interfaces available for rpi than for laptop. all of those plugin boards that give you relays, A to D, cameras, ultrasonic sensors .etc.

do you want to tie up a rpi for 2 months or a laptop?

features only on xschedule
ability to map live video directly onto your megatree or matrix

it used to be that the scheduler in xLights (written in 2010) was way less capable than FPP on a rpi.
Over the last year, xScheduler now has more features. FPP group is now working to close that gap.

others can add to this list

I been using the Xscheduler for a year now and running on a mini Windows 7 computer as I needed to run some other Windows apps.

One thing I will say with the Xscheduler you can schedule your events down to the second as where the scheduler for the FPP is in 30 minute blocks.

And yes there's been a major and lots of updates in the last year.

more xscheduler advantages. i like that all my falcon controllers are shown in bottom left corner. if they are alive and well they are green. any issue, they turn red. double click on a controller and the web page ui for that controller comes up.

The 30 minute blocks are for convenience. You can manually edit the time down to the second.

Thanks, I was just going to make this point.
