Mega Tree with odd number of strands
« on: November 14, 2019, 08:37:51 PM »
Is it possible to set up a mega tree with an odd number of strands in XLights?

I made a mega tree with a star on top that starts from my last strand on my mega tree and it would be easier if that strand ends at the top of the tree. I'm trying to avoid running a cable from the bottom of the tree to the top.

Thanks for your help.

As long as all the strands are the same length you will be fine. Different length strands are a pain.

Seems like one of those questions easily answered by just trying it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that will be the problem that I'll run into. My last strand is half of my others because it doesn't run back down to the ground. I'll try messing with the settings some more this morning.

As long as you're not trying to automatically push the configuration to the controller its easy.  For instance lets keep it simple and say you want 3 vertical sections and had a 150 pixel string.  Tell xLights its 1 string of 150 nodes and 3 strands per string and it will zig zag it and you get 3 sections of 50 pixels that end at the top.

Don't get hung up on where the real physical strings start and stop.  Just lie and tell xLights the whole tree is one string.

That would work, except it then won't work correctly if you use xLights to upload config to controllers.  You will need manually fix/update the uploaded config as xLights will stick all the strands onto a single port.

Ok thanks! That's kind of what I was looking for. The controller part I should be able to do. I came over from using Vixen the last few years and it should be similar to that.

Thanks again for the help!
