Chinese Paper Lantern going RGB
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:54:06 PM »
Last year we had several balls hanging from our tree to no end could we find a economical way to pull it off then we came up with Chinese rice paper lanterns. We ordered in several at a cost of a buck a piece, inserted dumb pixels and a controller for 3.00 and WOW This year adding a larger one but have dded a frame and pixels now it works like a charm.. As for the paper we set out several lanterns for testing  to see how they hold up In West Texas weather can be hot rainy or cold for 4 months our test lanterns stayed outside no problems.. Just a cheap idea for major effects..

Hey Broadway Lights

Could U tell me more or maybe show the inside of the lantern, and your framing.  It is a very interesting idea and I have been looking for something really new and different and U are right on it.

thanks
Brad

Holispheres are for string lights giving only one color we checked on them and decided on what we considered a better route  last year we had smaller spheres with dumb pixels inside wow they were great this year wanted to incorporate a larger sphere with pixels set as a matrix giving it a show in its self..
always looking for something different  and a small tip, Chinese paper lanterns are cheap cheap $1.00
and really hold up also there are some that are more of a fabric design.. just sayin I will post a build
Thanks..

I wouldn't call string lights as being one color.  I wrapped a holisphere with a string of RGB nodes by going around in random order, but did not use it for last season since I want my strings to be wrapped horizontally around the sphere so I can chase a color around the ball.  I had one for testing but used the nodes for another project.  I've also made a mount that will let me put it on top of a pixel tree.  Either way, paper lanterns or holispheres, they all look good and add to a variety of display elements.

Thanks for the link on those Jean, I found them on ebay from one of the online sellers for big sale price and $1.99 shipping (their home website wanted $13.99 for the same shipping!)

Ordered 3 sets so I can make up 9 of these and put in the mega tree with my other large bulbs my wife and I have bought!
