Title: Sharing....
Post by: dkulp on November 12, 2014, 12:08:31 PM

I personally don't think there are enough people in this section sharing their xLights XML files for the stuff they are sequencing...   :-)

Serious, how are those of us that are WAY behind in their sequencing (partially due to spending so much time enhancing xLights) supposed to catch up if there aren't enough sharers.   If anyone has any of the "common" things (stuff from TSO, etc...) to share, I'd love it.  Particularly if it has a pixel megatree, pixel star, and pixel arches.

:-)

i almost hate to admit it, but for me it is clicking the random effects button on my whole house preview.  I then go thru each time increment and either protect it  because it looks ok or leave unprotected.  After looking at them all I click random again to get new effects for those I didn't like and go thru the process again.  Repeat as necessary.  I will start the year out with more songs than I usually have and then will keep going back and tweaking one song at a time until SWMBO is happy.  That's my process so far for this year.  And that really does not give anything unique worth sharing.  Most of the stuff I have seen shared is for songs I would never play in my show. but I like traditional Christmas music.

twooly, Looking at some of your Star effects, I put a "Pinwheel" on my star. Very easy chase effect around the perimeter.
If your star is atop a pixel tree, paste the same code into both cells.

Code: [Select]
Pinwheel,None,Effect 1,ID_CHECKBOX_LayerMorph=0,ID_SLIDER_SparkleFrequency=101,ID_SLIDER_Brightness=355,ID_SLIDER_Contrast=0,ID_SLIDER_EffectLayerMix=0,E1_SLIDER_Speed=6,E1_TEXTCTRL_Fadein=0.00,E1_TEXTCTRL_Fadeout=0.00,E1_CHECKBOX_FitToTime=0,E1_CHECKBOX_OverlayBkg=0,E1_SLIDER_Pinwheel_Arms=8,E1_SLIDER_Pinwheel_ArmSize=175,E1_SLIDER_Pinwheel_Twist=6,E1_SLIDER_Pinwheel_Thickness=46,E1_CHECKBOX_Pinwheel_Rotation=1,E1_CHOICE_Pinwheel_3D=None,E1_SLIDER_PinwheelXC=0,E1_SLIDER_PinwheelYC=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette1=#FF0000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette1=1,E1_BUTTON_Palette2=#00FF00,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette2=1,E1_BUTTON_Palette3=#FF0000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette3=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette4=#00FF00,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette4=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette5=#FF0000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette5=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette6=#000000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette6=0,E2_SLIDER_Speed=9,E2_TEXTCTRL_Fadein=0.00,E2_TEXTCTRL_Fadeout=0.00,E2_CHECKBOX_FitToTime=0,E2_CHECKBOX_OverlayBkg=0,E2_BUTTON_Palette1=#FF0000,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette1=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette2=#00FF00,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette2=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette3=#0000FF,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette3=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette4=#FFFF00,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette4=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette5=#FFFFFF,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette5=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette6=#000000,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette6=1

I'll have to give that a try, thanks.  Created those before we had the pinwheel and never thought to try it on the star to be honest.

Here is how I sequence

I set Audacity to Bars, 4 beats to a bar. Create the sequence in NC and then mark the timing grids to denote the Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Solo, etc.

I do not do the LOR type of sequencing where folks like to sequence to the syllables. I sequence to the beats. I'm not trying to create Light Induced Strokes in my viewers.

Once I have a good set of 8 effects, I can use them via cut paste in different sections of the song. I'll just go back and change the colors.

That's how I do it and this works for most songs.

flyinverted, I like your approach. I too hate to see a display flashing around (because they can) and would much rather see the lighting help tell the story in the music. quite often with our new RGB displays we can have great effects playing for a number of bars/ phases in the music without have to result in too many flashes of light that make the audience wonder what the display was trying to tell in the musics storyline.

And the added benefit of our new approach to sequencing using Nutcracker makes it so much faster to sequence a song. Yes there are some effects that you can do in a grid sequencer,  but generally with a RGB display you don't need to do that anyway.

Now for those that still have strings of lights to worry about then yes the sequencer grid works well.

Fly--do you cut/paste/export into excel or something then import back into XL/NC?

I have 2 methods to my madness.  If I have a really good set of 8 bars of effects, I will sometimes cut/paste into Excel or Google docs.   I will do that only if I have a set of effects that I want to use in a different song.

When working within a song, I copy/paste 8 cells at a time within NC.

Here is a quick sample of getting 8 bars done in a song.   Note how simple this is, looks very basic to us Nutcrackers but people love this. I got cars stopping in the street when I had my megatree partially assembled in the garage last weekend. Neighbors whom I've never talked to stopped to say "THAT LOOKS COOL"

I used the audio from this mashup.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8JDFHtBA8M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8JDFHtBA8M)

The set of effects I shared start at 23.591 seconds.

My show runs on my boat in a 4 hour long parade for 2 days in a row.  The parade runs a 10 mile course with 30-40 boats. The folks watching the parade do not want to hear 40 boats worth of cheesy Christmas songs.  When my boat goes by I see people get up and start dancing and that's good enough for me.

Really like the Wave effect in Nutrocker for the Mtree, step 30 at 72.015 seconds. (though I played with the colors a bit)

Code: [Select]
Wave,None,Effect 1,ID_CHECKBOX_LayerMorph=0,ID_SLIDER_SparkleFrequency=200,ID_SLIDER_Brightness=100,ID_SLIDER_Contrast=0,ID_SLIDER_EffectLayerMix=0,E1_SLIDER_Speed=11,E1_TEXTCTRL_Fadein=0.00,E1_TEXTCTRL_Fadeout=0.00,E1_CHECKBOX_FitToTime=0,E1_CHECKBOX_OverlayBkg=0,E1_CHOICE_Wave_Type=Sine,E1_CHOICE_Fill_Colors=Palette,E1_CHECKBOX_Mirror_Wave=0,E1_SLIDER_Number_Waves=180,E1_SLIDER_Thickness_Percentage=36,E1_SLIDER_Wave_Height=79,E1_CHOICE_Wave_Direction=Left to Right,E1_BUTTON_Palette1=#FF0000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette1=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette2=#00FF00,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette2=1,E1_BUTTON_Palette3=#0000FF,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette3=1,E1_BUTTON_Palette4=#FFFF00,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette4=1,E1_BUTTON_Palette5=#FFFFFF,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette5=0,E1_BUTTON_Palette6=#000000,E1_CHECKBOX_Palette6=0,E2_SLIDER_Speed=18,E2_TEXTCTRL_Fadein=0.00,E2_TEXTCTRL_Fadeout=0.00,E2_CHECKBOX_FitToTime=1,E2_CHECKBOX_OverlayBkg=0,E2_BUTTON_Palette1=#FF0000,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette1=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette2=#00FF00,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette2=0,E2_BUTTON_Palette3=#0000FF,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette3=1,E2_BUTTON_Palette4=#FFFF00,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette4=0,E2_BUTTON_Palette5=#FFFFFF,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette5=0,E2_BUTTON_Palette6=#000000,E2_CHECKBOX_Palette6=0

Just wanted to say thanks.  The Nutrocker one is spot on and a big help for me.  One question though:

What's the difference between Star_RGB and Star_Matrix?   I figured out the other star configurations, but those two confused me a bit.
Title: Re: Sharing....
Post by: jnealand on November 26, 2014, 09:21:43 AM
Before the star model got changed a number of us used a multimodel approach for multi tier stars with one for programming and one for the preview.
Title: Re: Sharing....
Post by: dkulp on November 26, 2014, 09:39:43 AM
Yea... and even with the new Star model, having the different approaches provides some cool effects.   I didn't really realize that until I saw his Nutrocker file.   He has individual models for the three tiers which provides some interesting effects that would just apply to that level.   He also has the Star_RGB and Star_Matrix model which I'm not sure what the difference is.   I mapped the Star_RGB to my full 3-tier model.   Just trying to figure out what the Star_Matrix would be.

The cool one in the Nutrocker is the model that takes the outer tier and instead of mapping it to a Star, maps it to a SingleStrand which makes the effects go around the star.   I never would have thought to do that.   Very nice.

Definitely one of the reasons why I like seeing peoples shared sequences.   I get all kind of new ideas and such that I'd never have thought of.

it would be nice when people share their xml sequences they also include their xlights_rgbeffects.xml file and the xlights_networks.xml file. This way you can create a new folder put all files there , and just point your xlights to that as the show folder. Now when you launch you will see their exact setuo. You can browse their models, you can also see exactly what their show looks like in the preview. All preview settings are also stored in the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file.

the only thing missing is a sound file. I just pick any song, i use carold of the bells.mp3.

so my process to be able see peoples sequence exactly like they do

1) Request sequence files and the xlights_xxx.xml files
2) Create a new folder put their files there.
3) Add one sound file, i use carol of the bells.mp3
4) Go into xlights set show folder to be new folder i just created
5) Use the 3rd file open optin, create a new sequence from a sound file. NOTE: Click that you have an xml file.
6) It picks my carol of the bells.mp3 and prompts for an xml file
7) Click save. This now creates teh xseq file that was missing.
8) Go to preview and open xseq and rpess play. If the person had been using preview you will see their entire show.

9) Copy just their sequence xml file over to my show folder
10) change xlights to point to my show folder. You can also launch a second xlights, each can be pointing at different show folders.
11) In my xlights repeat steps 5) to 7) above. Now you are probably prompted for
"Ther eis a model xxxx in their sequence file, what model in your show do you want to use. It is much easier to decide this when you can see what their original models looked like.

BTW, this is an awesome feature of xlights (Which i did not make) that allows people to get a sequence moved over and allow you to see their show in the preview. Thanks to matt, dave, dan, don, frank for all contributing to the xlights framework.

I cant tell how useful it is to be able to troubleshoot when i can duplicate a persons environment.

so send your xlights_rgbeffects.xml and xlights_networks.xml

Hi guys:

Let me begin by saying Thanks to all of you this great tool and for sharing your sequences.. it helps a lot!

I'm a newbie here and  I ended up using Twooly's version of Wizard in Winter , but the effects were a bit of for my specific sound file, so I tweaked the effect timings, colors and speeds and added a few more effects, etc....  Now I'm giving it back to the community so others can benefit from it as well

Note:  Twooly's version had a star as well.. I only used the Megatree piece of it.
