Subbuffers!  JCook was you able to get this working?

So yes I got it to work.  Here is how I set it up.

1. In the layout setting I created two different face definitions because I have two characters, you can still do the left / right or top/bot with 1 definition.
2. in sequencer view, I added two layers below my main Matrix.
3.  I added the face effect to each of these layers then selected my Face 1 for the top layer and face two for the bottom layer.
4.  Once you have the effects on each layer select all of the effects on the top layer open the Layers settings,  down in the window with the yellow box right click and choose halves - Right or Left,.  In your case Top / bottom.  Repeat for the second layer.

Subbuffers. Not Submodels.

What wasn't clear to me is that you were referring to subbuffers on the layers settings.  You can also see subbuffers in the layout setup under submodels.

the sub buffers works for regular effects but not for the faces effect.  The faces effect won't work on sub-models.

Nutcracker Models / Model a MAtrix in two halves

I have a 30h x 60w matrix.  In Vixen 3 i am able to use the Matrix as one large 30x60 matrix or 2-30x30 Matrices.  I use these for signing faces so I can have a left face and a right face.

The matrix is wired horizontally as 30 rows of 60

I played around with the models but can't figure out how to make this work in XLights.  Submodels on the Matrix doesn't see to allow you to setup faces on them.

Is there a way this can be done in xLights.

I've attached pictures of the fill matrix and the left right

Yes, It was me that mentioned of render times.  My show is not huge by any means but the matrix I'm building is really bogging down Vixen, 13 minutes to open the file.  It is LipSync effects on the matrix s doing it.  I'm going to recreate the same some in xLights and see how it performs, that will be the deciding factor for me.  I really like the interface of Vixen but the location based effects and performance are the big ones.

Thanks for your input.

I think you are making the right decision moving from vixen.

Ok, Have to ask, why you say this?  Not to start a this vs that discussion.  Did you use Vixen before?  I'm considering going to the May xLights in Vegas, actually booked a room just in case.

Bugs in xLights/Nutcracker / Edit Display Elements window will not show

Ver 2017.5

When trying to add items to the sequencer, the Edit Display Window will not open.  Another user opened this setup and had the same issue, he delete the reference to the perspectives in the rgb_effects.xml file n it worked.  These issue occurred on several different shared show directories I have but if I delete the perspective reference it works.

Here is a link to the show directory that also contains the package logs zip as well.

That worked for me too.  Tried it on a couple different shows that didn't work before.  I think i'll report it as a bug.

Thanks,
Jay

I have the manual, already reset the perspective, that's not it.  Even if it's not in the perspective it will open in the other profiles I have.

James,

Thanks for the offer, may take you up on the remote assist, I do have TeamViewer, skype

My main reasons for moving from Vixen are Whole house effects and performance. I do a lot of Lip Syncing and have it on a matrix, moving to P10 panels this year, I created a 196x96 matrix.  In a 3 minuted song it takes Vixen over 13 minutes to open the file something I just can't work with.

I opened a shared show directory I got from someone else and I could open the Display Elements window but then I opened a different one and it wouldn't open.

I created a new show directory, added a few poly lines to a layout, created a basic sequence the added a new poly line to the layout, tried to add it to the sequence but can't get the "Edit Display Elements" window.

Here is the simple show directory I am working with, maybe you can see if you can get the Display Elements to open.

So I'm "trying" to transition from Vixen 3 after using it for 3 years...

I created a few models and started a sequence.
I added a model (after starting the sequence) and now trying to add it to the sequence.

I cannot get the newly added models added to the sequence. If I start a new sequence, it appears.  I'm using Version 2017.5

I've tried Right-Click in the scheduler
View->Display Elements from the main menu

nothing happens..absolutely nothing..

What am I missing?

If figured out by dumb luck what the issue was, maybe you can find this useful.  I was getting an error when starting xlights that 4 of my arches xlights could not calculate the starting channels.  I deleted those arches and the locking up issue stopped.  I'll explain how I did my setup.  I'm a Vixen 3 user so I may use different terms than you use in xlights. like you say "models" Vixen its "elements" so please bare with me.

We might not have found all the weird things people will try to know what to block.
I just wanted to get to a point as quickly as possible to try some sequencing so I watched a few how to videos on xlights and it said I could create a null controller then come back later and configure my controllers so that is what I did.  I created a 15,000 channel Null controller at first, created my Models, I don't have a complete sequence was only testing how some of the effects worked on the Model groups.

I'm not sure what you mean by trying to assign models to a E1.31 device.

I mean reassign the models to different channels.

When I created my models I used copy / paste, it appears the arches I mentioned above had the same start/end channel numbers.  When xLights opened I got the "cannot calculate starting channels" error.  I clicked on OK and was able to proceed. I went to the Layout tab to assign a model to a different channel range.  I would click on the button for the "Start Channel" property, make my changes in popup window ( i call it the channel config window) then press OK this is where xlights would hang up.
