Bugs in xLights/Nutcracker / Cant delete effects after importing...
« on: December 23, 2023, 10:42:12 AM »
I just updated my display with new models, created a new sequence with all the models, and imported the effects from the old file.

Now I cannot delete any of the effects. If I click on an effect and click the delete button, the effect stops autoplaying, but the effect does not leave the timeline. I have also tried Right clicking on the effect to bring up the context menu and selecting delete from that, however the effect does not leave that way either, although again it will stop autoplaying until I reselect it.

I have been a long time user of xlights. Currently using the latest version 2023.22.

I just tested deleting effects on a sequence I have not imported effects from, no problem. The effect deletes properly. This appears to only happen if I use the import effects function. I packaged the sequence and attached so you can check it out to see what's going on.

Yes that did it. I had already experimented with the z position, but I wasn't sure if moving forward was positive or negative. I had selected 1 and -1, and set all the others to 0. Thought that would be enough but apparently you need a much bigger number.

Thanks so much. And the transparency is a nice touch.

I just started working with the newest version of xlights. It's been a few years since I upgraded Xlights since the old version did everything I wanted it to.

Anyway after the upgrade I added a few new models. I have a mega-tree that should be in the very front with icicles behind it on the roof line. However whenever I render a sequence and watch it, the icicles render over top the mega-tree.

I know when I actually run the lights it won't be a problem, however I find it really annoying when sequencing since the effects I am going for all appear differently than they actually will when on the house.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this issue and make the icicles appear behind the mega-tree in the preview window?

Hi Dabil,

I loved watching your show! Just wondering if your interested in helping out a newbie and making some money along the way?

I'm a certified Windows Sysadmin for the DoD ......but xLights and the Christmas Can Can song have been kicking my butt! I just can't seem to get past this first sequence.

I don't have a complicated layout but need help. If your interested, please let me know Sir.

Thought I would post the video for what I ended up with for my 2017 show. I didn't get all the lights up. I never did find a good way that I liked to build icicles for example. And I didn't do any of the dormer lights. Other than that I think my first show turned out pretty well.

I will start sequencing again very soon. Right now I am currently working with the facebook group for singing faces. I think that finishes up here and March and I will begin work on my 2018 show.

Hey decor dudes and dudettes,

I have 3 p10 panels on my roof peaks approx. 30-40 feet apart.   I would like to create some effects of imagery
or text to scroll across the 3.

Example I have 3 dancing skeletons that start on the left panel, move to the right. I would like to have the far end skeleton begin to show on the next panel as they scroll off left-right.

Is the easiest way to accomplish this is to create a model of the 3 P10, next to each other, then as they scroll it would fill onto next panels?   I guess I would use the same channels for both?

So may changes going on, didn't know if Gil,Keith,Dan etal may have slipped something in Xlights that would accomplish this goal.

Thanks for any insight.
Best,
David

If you put the three p10' s in a group you can scroll items across in exactly the manor you describe simply by putting the images on the group. I do that in sequences with my matrices all the time.

Bugs in xLights/Nutcracker / Save File dialog, new folder button crash

In my show I use Arches that have what I have called a "fan". Not sure if there is a proper name for it. But it's a staggered webbing that goes on the inner diameter of the arch. Kind of like a wagon wheel.

Last year I had modeled this in Xlights with 11 individual single line models that I then grouped together. The model was adequate but sloppy looking and a little less tidy to work with than I liked. So this year when I was updating my set-up I had an epiphany that I could replace it by using a 180 degree spinner.

The spinners look way better and are far easier to set-up. No more constant fiddling with the end points to get it to look just right. And at first all the effects seemed to look about the same after a little tweaking.

But there is one effect I cannot get to work on the 180 degree spinner. And that is the morph left or right sweep. Instead of sweeping it kind of jumps all over the place on the spinner model. I was hoping this could be fixed so I could use the cleaner looking spinners instead of going back to the single line fan grouping method I had used previously.

I am attaching a packaged sequence that demonstrates the bug and the desired effect. And here is the demonstration video. To explain, the right arch is the single line fan that has the desired look of the effect, and the left is the 180 degree spinner that is buggy. As you can see the up and down full sweeps look identical, but there is a big difference on the left/right full sweeps.

Many effects will look different on the spinner compared to the single line fan, however with a little tweaking I can figure out how to get the desired effect. However, I haven't figured out any way to get the correct looking effect on the spinner.

I am using 2018.4 64 bit windows build.

Pretty much I stopped sequencing in July when I received all my hardware I had ordered in January. From then on it was just building the elements and finalizing my xlights set-up. Then the fall soccer season hit. I am my sons U8 coach. They ended up making it to the state championships so the season went extra long. The week of the final game my 6th child was born. (Samantha Elaine 6lbs 11 oz.). Then thanksgiving...

So as you can see a bit of a while wind finish. I am currently in the final stages of actually putting my light display, well, on display lol.

I am sure once I get all this up and working I will start sequencing again. Not sure what direction I will go in. I generally just work on whatever I am feeling inspired to do. I actually have a lot more I worked on that I haven't put in this thread yet, so I will have to get caught up with that at some point to.

Anyway, happy holidays to all! Looking forward to continuing this work in the near future.

My Show Setup / Re: Late start setting up

I think I am down to the last hurtle, and that is the FM Transmitter.

I know everyone seems to like the EDM transmitters. However, I don't think I have time at this point to purchase one and assemble it before Christmas is here. So I am looking for something that might do the trick that I can just pick up on Amazon and was wondering if anyone could recommend something. Or at least tell me what not to get.

Here is the list of what I am considering...

Whole House FM Transmitter 3.0: Has stereo output, but the range seems kind of low at only 150 ft. It's only about 35' though to the street, but it has to go through a wall. Would this be strong enough?

Fail-Safe Long Range FM Transmitter - FS CZH-05B

TIVDIO 5W / 15W Wireless FM Transmitter: seems extremely powerful with a range of 1 to 2.5 miles? should I be concerned?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. And yeah looks like the way you describe is the way I ended up doing it. Was just hoping someone had a slicker way to do it.

My Show Setup / Late start setting up

My newest daughter was born in November, I had surgery shortly after, My dad and 2 brothers came to visit...

so after all that I am getting a little late start setting up all the hardware for my first Christmas show. The one thing that is hindering my progress right now is how to mount a CG1500 case to my mega-tree. I am in north west ohio where we can get some snow so I can't leave it on the ground other wise the little foam lined holes at the bottom will let snow in and short out the controller (or so I fear). If anyone has any good ideas or can show a photo or good description for how to safely secure the controller box would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

You are welcome. I am but one person in a sea of very talented and creative people. I have been inspired by too many people to list.  I recently received all my physical lights so I have been busy building the elements but hope to get back to this and do more sequencing soon.

Excellent news. Glad to hear things have improved for you. Rendering in about an eighth of the time is pretty good increase. Saves you over a minute each time!
