Do You Need Help? Post it here / Re: Problems Starting Xlights
« on: July 30, 2024, 05:31:53 PM »
I just had that same problem.  I had taken my old desktop and formatted the drive to get a clean new install as that old desktop was over 10 yrs old and had accumulated a lot of junk stuff that I tried and abandoned along with starting as a win7 machine and then getting upgraded to win10 and years of upgrades.  Anyway, got windows running good installed xlights and got exactly the same symptoms as the OP.  The solution was to install/reinstall the Visual C++ software and voila all is well.

Xlights Setup / Re: Gamma settings
« on: March 19, 2024, 07:21:45 AM »
Just an observation.  I never see gamma used except to get a good orange at Halloween time and I have seen several references to just leave it alone except then.  I suspect it is a little like pandora's box.  LOL

If I had one I would just be using standard tree and star effects.  That is what it is.

Do You Need Help? Post it here / Re: Best pratice for Pi and controllers

I suspect the real difference is running wireless or wired.  I run 12 FPP remotes in wireless mode and have ZERO data cables in my yard.  Just another of the choices that we get to make.  Both choices work fine.

I do not know the answer to your question, but I suspect that a clock would only be needed if trying run in standalone mode.  While that mode exists it is very limited in function and very few folks use standalone as far as I have ever seen.  I read multiple forums every day and own two v3s but used with Ras[berry Pis as drivers.

Thanks Billy.  Do you need donations for the web space?

I have 20 snowflakes (Boscoyo 24" 48 nodes each)  I have them in multiple locations and always run 4 per port on whatever controller is closest.  I have two groups of 4 on my roof.  For the 1st group I use a 30ft extension (20 + 10) to the first flake, then a 5ft extension between the others.  The 2nd group on the roof I start with a 20ft extension and then 5 ft between each of the rest.   All my other groups of 4 use 15ft or less to the first flake.  NO POWER INJECTION is used and no data boosters either.

Lights / Re: LED strips in Arches

If you insist on using strips, any of them should work with a Falcon controller.  The key thing to watch for is that some strips light up 3 pixels per node, ie, they have 3 pixels controlled by each ws2811 chip vs just one.  I don't remember the models numbers, but I'm sure someone will chime in.  After making mine, the family decided they did not like the diffused look along side all the other non-diffused lights and I only used them one season and sold them.

When I was a Director of IT many, many years ago I loved to hire programmers who ran straight at the walls put in front of them, because of their enthusiasm and belief that they could get thru that wall.  But reality often sank in early and they learned that there were paths that could get them around the wall with less work.  So I say, go for it, but I for one will not be holding my breath to see if this wall gets knocked down.  Running into walls is part of the learning process.  Have fun.

Do You Need Help? Post it here / Re: New to xLights Need E1.31 setup help.

There is a major difference with sending data over wifi and with using wifi with FPP master/remote operation.  Sending data directly almost always ends up with lag, but master remote only sends sync packets and if a packet is missed the remote just keeps going as all the data is already on the remote.

I do not bother with that but I think you are talking about the tools > perspective options.  Not sure where that is stored.  But try it and see.

If going back and forth between two computers besure to keep your file paths the same.  For instance on my Dektop I keep all my xlights data files on my D drive at d:/xlights.  On my laptop I only have my one drive so I bought a 64gb nano USB drive and keep that as drive D.  Then I copy all my stuff from the desktop to a D:/xlights folder and all file paths remain the same.

Us old guys never give up, maybe we just have to much time on our hands or maybe not since I never seem to have enough time.  Keep going Carl, I'll be watching for your success video.
