Pasting Nutcraker Pattern to LSP
« on: November 16, 2014, 04:07:46 PM »
I am about to go crazy trying to get this to work right. I created a an XML file in Nutcracker and I have loaded it into the patterns on LSP but I can not for the life of me get it into LSP. When I try to drag and drop it LSP thinks for a minute like it is going to do something and then nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

LSPs pattern import and export does not work as expected (its' broke and it's not getting fixed in 2.8).

The only way currently to get a pattern into LSP is to manually do it.

Always start this process with LSP shutdown.

First copy the Nutcracker exported LSP file Whatevername_USER.xml into the 'My LightShow Settings' folder.

Rename the file 'MyUserPatterns.xml' to some thing like MyUserPatterns.OLD.xml

Then rename the Nutcracker exported LSP file Whatevername_USER.xml to 'MyUserPatterns.xml'.

Then restart LSP. There will be only one effect in the effect library, the one exported by Nutcracker.

Double click on that pattern and once LSP announces that it has been copied you can paste it anywhere you want in your sequence.

Over the next couple of days I will be reviewing a program that may provide a way to merge the Nutcracker pattern into your LSP effects library.

Since it's going to be bad weather over then next couple of days I can't do anything outside anyway :) I think I can get the program tested and maybe debugged if necessary.

Interesting the version I have I can do the import and never have to shutdown LSP and replace the xml file.  Its was the last 2.8 version published last year 2013.

Thanks for the repsonse. I did everything and no change. It's now the only pattern to show up but when I try to paste I don't get anything.

The channels numbers match exactly to your model?  Also the controller has to be expanded out to see all the channels.

Here is what I am trying to work with. I have a horizontal matrix that has 12 universes and each universe has 170 channels. Basically I am maxing out a P12. In the nutcracker preview everything looks perfect. I click on model export and create the xml file. I set this first test at just 5 seconds since that should be quick and easy to paste in. I go into LSP and I can get the pattern to show up. I have expanded out all of the channels and still nothing. I know it's something stupid, I just can't figure out where I am going wrong.

Here is a short how to video which might help with your problem.

Please note that for the file transfer I have built a batch file which makes the copy, pasting and file renaming a one step operation.

Let me know if you get it to work.

I owe you a beer!

I finally got it to work and just as I suspected it was something stupid. I wasn't clicking update grid before exporting. Just made 2 files and both worked great. I also tried just loading them into patterns instead o changing the file name and it worked. Needless to say I am excited and ready to get everything wrapped up so I can go live next Monday.

Thanks for all your help!

Simple things can bite you in the butt pretty hard.  :)

A video is worth a million words sometimes.

LSP import is a hit or miss function. That is why I just simply chose to go to the direct transfer method.

The export does not work at all. It goes through the motions but the output file contains nothing.

Quick question for you, I'm not at my show computer right now but can you keep adding nutcracker effects the way you showed or do you loose the older one.  Once you rename the file for the new imported effect.  Which I was able to try it right now, have to wait till I go home.

Quick question for you, I'm not at my show computer right now but can you keep adding nutcracker effects the way you showed or do you loose the older one.  Once you rename the file for the new imported effect.  Which I was able to try it right now, have to wait till I go home.

The way I do it now takes a little effort but I have automated a lot of it with batch files.

The process is like this.

After I use the effect in a sequence I save the sequence and exit LSP.

Then just as a backup I rename the 'MyUserPatterns.xml' nutcracker effect to some name that tells me what the effect is. Then I rename the backup file 'MyUserPatterns.OLD.xml' back to 'MyUserPatterns.xml'.

Then I open LSP, locate where I just pasted the effect, then highlight that effect and right click on it, select 'Copy to a new pattern' choose the group I wish it added to and give it a name, usually similar to the name of the .xml file for future reference.

Now it is in your LSP user library. Caution this library file can become quite large.

As an alternate method you can try the Pattern library import. If it works for your effect that would be good. I have just had erratic success using the import function. I have had it import a pattern but it would not save it etc. As I mentioned earlier the Pattern library export to file only creates an empty file (this will NOT get fixed).

There has been a utility built that will circumvent the LSP process allowing the merging of Nutcracker effects with the main LSP file. I just have not taken time to test it yet. I need it myself so over the next few days I'll finish the utility checkout.

Hope that helps. I am within a couple of days of having all my lights up.  :)
