The bars effect can be adjusted to do a candy cane color motion on a straight line.  The issue is whether the candy cane is modeled as a straight line.  I can't remember if we have a candy cane model or not.  I'm pretty sure I drew my coro canes as a custom model.  The downside to that is my canes are modeled as a rectangular plane and not a straight line so I can't create an effect like that unless I create a dummy model that's a straight line and map it to the same channels.  I'm actually using imported data from LOR to sequence my coro canes.  That's the beauty of xLights there are so many options.  But this does give me an idea.  It would be nice to be able to switch a model from what I'd call "plane" mode to "straight line" mode.

Would you use the straight line model for the Spiral North Poles like Sean and David did last year?

I'm not familiar with what they did but that sounds more like a spirals effect.  If the display element has any width at all then the straight line thing doesn't work unless it's the same channel number across the width.  You really just need to think about how is a model represented and how are the channels numbered and you will know exactly how an effect will be put on the element.

we do not have a specific model for candy cane, northpoles, stars wrapped in a certain way .etc.

dave and i used a custom model for both our candles and our northpoles.

all effects work on these models but the following worked the best
bars, spirals, twinkle, colorwash, fire, strobe, single strand
