Introduction to Strand/Node effects for Nutcracker/xLights
« on: April 28, 2015, 01:07:15 PM »
Earlier, I posted a teaser screenshot of the node/strand effect editing that I was working on.  I'm now back from vacation and was able to push all the changes to github and got enough stuff working to create a short (17 minutes, so not really short) introduction of what I'm trying to do with it and what currently works (and what doesn't, found a bug while recording):

I just uploaded the 4.0.25 build for the Mac and it includes all of this (including the fix for the bug).  Thus, Mac users get it early.   :-)

Go play with it.   I welcome any comments, thoughts, ideas, etc...

Very nice Dan. I think you have taken care of my use case. Awesome stuff.

Note:
If you just need to be near Pluto, Goofy, Donald and Mickey to get this much work done we can take an offering to send you to Disneyland next. :)

I can't check it out till tonight.  But every since the Teaser screenshot I've been laughing thinking I hope at least your wife had fun on the cruise. :)

LOL.    It would need to be another Disney Cruise.  :-)

Seriously, the Disney Cruise is awesome.  Where many cruise lines put in a giant casino and staff it with card dealers and such, Disney puts in a gigantic kids club and staffs it with kid activity personnel and kid geared electronics and crafts and such.   The result is that when you get on the ship after your day excursion as a family, the kids immediately want to ditch you and head to kids care.  You pick them up for dinner and they scarf down their food as fast as possible and then bug you the rest of dinner because you eat too slow and you're cutting into their kids care time.    I think my wife and I had more "alone time" together on this family vacation than we've had on some of our getaways.

Absolutely enjoying this new option for the strands/nodes.  One question though, would it be possible to make the menu options more contextual?  The way my mind thinks, it makes more sense to see "show strands" instead of "toggle strands".  And vise versa, you would see "hide strands" if the strands are already showing.  Same would go for the nodes too, "show nodes" or "hide nodes".  Just my opinion though.  Keep up the awesome work on xlights.

I think he said he will do more with it later. Now it's just a rough sketch, I'm paraphrasing by the way. He mentioned this in the video he made.

We had a little discussion about this on Facebook today.   I'd prefer to not have the menu items at all and have some other action handle this.  One thought was a double click on the model/strand would do the show/collapse, but Gil said he'd like that to show/collapse the layers, not strands/nodes.  Another thought was a second +/- button like we have for the layers, but that might get confusing.  No idea yet.
