So with your help above I think I've got the set-up correct.  Jon, I actually appreciate you preaching 

Under the Nutcracker tab, I don't have a Update Grid box under the Combined Effects group on the lower left hand corner of that tab.  I see it on Sean's Jan. 9th tutorial, an introduction. 
There is a vertical line between the preview window and the RGB sequence box.  When I hover the cursor over the vertical line I get a doubled side arrow, however I can't move the line.

Oh, I'm using version 3.3.0.

Obviously I need the update grid box.  Any suggestions?

What is your computer screen resolution?  I'm guessing "low"

I have an older laptop with 1024x768 resolution and it is unusable (unusable may be harsh, but it is a PITA) with xLights.


My 1440x900 screen is perfect, though.

Well crap. It's a newer computer but older monitor; the highest it'll go is 1024 x 768.

Well not the end of the world after all.  I download XLights to an older laptop with a wide screen and it worked, the update grid button + other functions showed up.  I'm back in business with XLights/Nutcracker.

we want to make the windows in xlights dockable this would allow moving a window to a second monitor or minimizing (thus giving more space to see the grid).
