Effects Presets gallery
« on: July 25, 2015, 11:51:00 AM »
I've might of missed it, but is there a place we can share our effects presets?  I've seen some great effects that folks have developed and was wondering if there is a place we can download/upload the Xlights_rgb.xml files?

At this point there isn't an effect specific way to share presets. Remember that a preset can span multiple models, layers and timing marks. A preset can be an entire sequence.

Before the return of the presets feature came back to xLights 4.x, I just saved my new effects in a sequence that is just for effect saving/testing/developing.

I am confused about effects presets.   If I am reading the new users manual correctly, can I only use an effect preset within the sequence it was developed in?   I generated a really cool looking butterfly effect using the random effects generator and I would like to use that in another sequence.  I was thinking I could save it in one file, then close that file, open the 2nd file, right click and open up the saved effect preset.  But there is nothing there...    ??  I think I am missing the point here??

thanks for any help

edit--I opened up both files simultaneously, copied the effect from one file then dropped it onto the other..
Yeah I know brute force method but it worked.

Of course they can be used in multiple sequences.  You probably didn't create any groups and tried to put the preset at the top level.

In the next version of the manual , this is made clearer  :)

Caution: Do not use the default groups i.e. Favourites that is already there . Ensure that you create you own group or groups before saving your effect preset. It is good practise to create groups  that reflect the type of the effect.

I didn't think I had it creating any default groups.  That's what the old code did so people might be getting that from their old rgbeffects files.  There shouldn't be any issue adding to any group you like.  The problem is the code doesn't like it if the element isn't under a group it just messes up some of the logic.

It should work on Favorites just fine.  It's supposed to be YOUR favorites not ours. :)

Hi Gil,

So the 'Favourites' is not a Group that the software installs ?

Hmmm.. Maybe I created it after watching the tutorial video.

I did not have any 3.x stuff and am quite sure had trouble saving effects at that level, but no trouble one I started using other named groups below.

I may need to check that again and correct the (yet to be published) section in the manual.

I just did some work on this tonight.  I forgot but there is actually a top level group called "Effect Presets" which is there to make all the logic happy that wants each preset to have a parent.  The bug was that effects underneath the top level parent were not being loaded at startup so I've got that fixed.  I also discovered we were only populating the Preset dialog once per opening of the application so it wasn't being populated correctly if you switched Show directories so that should be fixed also...for next release of course.

And I did verify that there is not a Favorites group created by default...but I normally create one for myself.  In an empty directory you should only see the "Effect Presets" name at the top.

Hi Gil,

I had amended the manual (yesterday) ie the next version , to remove the references to "Favourites" , but still said do not create under the top layer ie (Effects Presets) ie create your own groups.

Is that (do not create under top layer ) still relevant ?

With the changes I checked in you should be able to create presets directly under Effect Presets just fine.
