Effects based on Percent
« on: August 05, 2015, 03:59:28 PM »
I am trying to do some effects that will "stair-step" up an element.  For example, based on the timing of a song, I want to fill the bottom 25% of a model (a mega tree, for example) by turning on the pixels with specific color.  I want to hold this "level" then moments later fill the model to 50%, then 75%, and then the whole thing.

1.  Is this possible now, without brute force of course?
2.  If not, would this be a possible effect addition down the road?
3.  If this is a possible enhancement, could a morph somehow be "tied" to it, where it will morph up to a point and stop and hold?

If I wasn't clear on my explanation please let me know.

Thanks,
James

Use the color wash effect and de-select the "Entire Model" check box.   Set you X,Y coordinates and your'e good to go.

Yeah I'm not exactly sure whether you want it to slide into place and hold or not but if so the best bet would probably be to draw a scene using the picture effect and then use movement to slide it into place.  With multiple copies you could make it move and stop when you wanted.

Great, thanks Gil. I tried the colorwash and I think that effect alone will do what I want. I didn't know the colorwash had those controls.

Great info, thanks!

I'm glad this question got posted because I was trying to get the same effect myself. I tried different effects and seetings and got close, but being fairly new to xlights, couldn't quite work out how to do it (although I was certain this program could.... it seems to be pretty much able to do anything  ;D ).
I ended up working at the node level which was a bit more painful with lots of cutting and pasting and a bit long winded (yes I realise xlights is designed to work at the model level and not the node level but I was desperate  :D).  But will go check out the colour wash settings .... for next time I want that step up effect.

Gil, are you talking about using the effect assist to create an image.  If so, I tried to use it and it keeps locking up.  I don't get any errors, it's a widows app hang, so I wait a few minutes and then close myself.

Would you mind clarifying which effect you would use?  I did try the colorwash and it works well, but I'm also curious as to what you were referring.

Thanks.

Yes I mean the Picture effect using Effect Assist.  I explained somewhere around here what you need to do if its locking up.  Until I can work on a fix the workaround is you need to point to a legimate file in the picture effect first and then you can bring up the effect assist and click New Image and start drawing.  Once you have an image the picture effect will always default to the previous image you had assigned so it's only a problem the very first time.  I always used it by starting with an existing picture effect so it was never a problem.
