Connect Pi using WiFi to e681
« on: August 18, 2015, 06:36:55 PM »
Is there any way to connect my pi to my e681 without using a wireless bridge?

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy,

I may have missed something in the qn, but why consider a wireless bridge ? Would you not connect the Pi to a router (hardwired) which in turn would be connected (hardwired) to the E681 controller ?

Should have been clearer.  I would like to put the controller  and Pi in a remote location and run it in remote mode I don't want to connect the 681 to the network with a cable

so you hardwire the PIi to the controller and install a wifi adapter into the Pi for access to your computer or another PI.  Easy peasy.

Jim,
Just curious - would you use just a normal Ethernet cable for the Pi to E681 direct connections or does it have to be a cross over cable ?

I don't use sandevices but Lynx and Falcon pixelnet controllers.  I just run a standard ethernet cable from the pi's ethernet connection and install a wifi adapter in the usb port.  Then configure them in the FPP web UI.  The only time I have seen reference to a crossover cable is for older computers who do not autodetect the cable interface.

You just use normal ethernet cable.  That's how I run my FPP.  One hard wire to a switch in the yard and then hard wires from that switch to all the controllers.  Some people use wireless just fine also.  I have a wireless usb dongle that I use to connect from my home network to the FPP to upload the songs and configure settings.

Hi Gil,

Yes - but there is no switch here . Just a direct connection from the Pi to the controller.

(If I had to do this , I would have used a cheap switch in between, but I guess it is not necessary now)
Once upon a time a cross cable would have been required - this is showing my age :)

Thanks Jim

Well of course the switch isn't needed if you're a newbie with only one controller.  I was just describing my setup. :)

Yes - I know :) .
Last year , was my first year with animated lighting , so everything was new to me. I had problems getting the laptop to talk to one of  controllers (I cant remember which one as I had 4 running at the end, it was the first one I tried ) without having either a switch/router in between - this was just when I was testing.  So on the ACL forum folks suggested the cross over cable , using a switch , using a router etc etc
Since I ended up buying and using a simple router with 8 ports (and then moved on) , I am curious..
