Group select and x,y position in Layout
« on: September 03, 2015, 11:17:55 AM »
Hi folks,

As I add more elements to my layout I am hampered by the lack of a group select capability to aid in moving several models around at once. Is there a way to do this?

Also it would be great if we could set the x,y position (in addition to the existing height/width/rotation) to precisely place a model in the layout. It would also be helpful if one could use the arrow keys to move a model around by a small amount based on the field (width, height, rotation, x, y) selected.

The ability to select multiple models works in 4.20 and earlier. From there you can right click and align, distrbute, etc. I just opened issue #355 for this.

You can manually edit the X,Y locations in the xlights_rgbeffects.xml file. Backup before you do.

Arrow keys for layout is a common request, but you can do it yourself, no programmer assistance needed.

Before proceeding, make sure the Num Lock feature is toggled on by pressing the key until you see an indicator light, or can type numbers with the keypad.

>>>Shortcut in all versions of Windows<<<

Press Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock on your keyboard at the same time.
When the window appears, press Spacebar or Enter.
Repeat this process to turn Mouse Keys off.

So it's broke in 4.2.1?  That would have been the first release with the new logic for detecting channel overlaps and I believe he changed the type of list being used to display the models.  I bet that's when multi-selection of models disappeared.  But hey at least they color red if you have overlaps.

Thanks guys,

I hadn't spent as much time in the layout tab with the releases before 4.2.3 so I hadn't realized multi-model select had gone missing.

Yep, I noticed the X,Y coordinates in the rgbeffects.xml there just didn't seem to be a way to do this within the app. I assume offsetXpct/offsetYpct are how this is done and computed as a percentage (x10-2) of the total distance from the origin. It's a little difficult adjusting these values blind in most circumstances, thus my request to add the functionality to the UI.

Thanks for the note about Mouse Keys. The procedure is a little different for Mac, but it looks like it does the same thing.

Multi model selects do work in the latest code, the bug s that the additional models clicked dont show as yellow, they are highlighted in a brighter white.
I have sent chrisD an email to make him aware.

So, to summarize.
You can
1) select a single mode by left clicking
2) Select a group of models by Shift-Left clicking a box around a group
3) Select a group of individual models by click-left clicking models

to move the selected models, ctl-left click the group and drag.

I am sure Chris will get the selection colors back to being yellow soon.
