Piano Effect
« on: October 03, 2015, 05:32:44 PM »
Trying to get the Piano effect working on my P10 set up in xLights (not in real life)

I followed the directions under Procedure from
#1-11 and got stuck on #11

The #Keys and #Rows both have sliders, but no box which tells you the numerical value resulting from moving the slider.  Moving the sliders and watching the model preview shows nothing.  Also, looking at the model screen, I see the keyboard but it only occupies a third of the horizontal space is should--when I switch to a full color on, for instance, the entire matrix area is covered with color, but switch back to piano effect and it goes back to only the left 1/3 or so of the normal matrix area.

Has anyone played with this?  Trying to do a boogie woogie rendition of Fur Elise with very defined notes so you would think that it would should show up.

PS.  I just watched a video Sean made during v3.0 and even Sean did not understand everything about the effect and referred to the author as "Don".

Don, if you see this post, please reply.  But, not just Don, anyone else who has successfully made the piano keyboard mode work (not equalizer, not player piano(

Sorry Charles nobody really know how or if it works.  I've just heard rumors that it does something but not quite what Sean originally wanted.  I think I have an email stored away that spells out what he really wants it to do but it probably won't get coded up this year.

Gil,

It kind of looked that way to me after watching the video, but I didn't know if it had been worked on since then or not.  It's a shame to be so close.

But...on to the next one.

Hey Charles,

I used the effect once last year on my mega-tree. Just now, I copied the effect to my 96x64 P10 Matrix and it seems to work as before. The Equalizer (bars) setting was best for me -  first image below. I never got Anim Image (face) working - but Piano Keys (top/edge) and Player Piano (scroll) also work - 2nd and 3rd images. Overall an OK effect but I didn't explore all of the alternatives. As far as I can tell the  "3 Keys", "# Rows" & "Placement" controls didn't (and still don't) seem to have any effect.

Hope that helps,

Paul.

Paul,

Thanks for digging for it.  The equalizer and player work OK for me also, but I am really after that "looking down at the piano keys" scene where I can make the keys look like they are being played.

I figured out how to map it all tonight at dinner with my wife having to listen to me rant.  I think excel is the ticket for this.  I am going to lay my P10 matrix out on an excel spreadsheet, then divide the spreadsheet up into 88 keys and map the columns in the spreadsheet to the columns in my matrix.

Then, I will know which note is which matrix pixel column and go from there.

We will see how it goes.

Please share your models once you get there, I'd like to play around with it, too.
