Using 1/2" EMT for 5m megatree is too flexible
« on: October 10, 2015, 01:11:07 PM »
I am assembling my 1/2" EMT for my 5m megatree and I found the EMT to be too flexible at that length.  Has anybody run into this & come up with a good fix?  I figured I would ask.   I am thinking about putting some type of mid-span support that will brace the EMT from the main PVC center pole.   Any other ideas?
thanks!

I used 2 hula hoops combined to make one large one mid way up the tree. My tree is made of 1/2 sch 40 pvc

Mine is a 2d tree so not sure if yours is 2d or 180 or 360.
Mine is 25mm pvc braces in a couple of places with strips of aluminium connected to the pvc by cable ties.
Admittedly 25mm is thicker than your emt.

Use unistrut for your cross braces. It will give you the strength that's needed.

Thanks for all the great ideas!    Mine is a 180 tree; doh didn't think to mention that...   I think I will try the hula hoop idea; I think that would be about the right size/diameter.   I was thinking about using some of my HDPE left over from making arches..   Might try that since I already have it.

1/2" EMT plastic pipe is way to flexible; even 3/4 can be tough.  Bracing and brackets are tough and time consuming!

I use 1/2" EMT....Metal pipe...4M's just fine last year...I made a 5 M mega tree this year, looks fine but I haven't put it up.

In one case I use my house wall to hang the pipes.  I attach a short length of 2x4, pre-drill and put in eyelets.  stagger two rows: say you have 10 lengths of pipe; 5 eyelets in row one, 3/4" spacing, and behind the first row of eyelets put the second row of eyelets about 1" back.  This way you can get the pipes or tube very close together.  The bottom is a length of PVC that I Bow into a "D" and tie the pipes to it with Nylon Ties.

My 5M tree hangs from a pipe I put up: very simple setup; 3' sleeve pipe set in the ground and I inset another pipe into it to make a mast....about 20' long.  Got the pipe from a fence supply company.  Cheap and easy.  If you put it in your lawn, the sleeve pipe should be below the grass.

The trick for using metal EMT is to take a 2"-3" length of 1/2 diameter wooden dowel and hammer it into the ends of the pipe.  Then pre-drill hole and screw in a hook (using #6 or larger; don't go nuts).  On the top of my mast I have a piece of 2x4 and do the same thing as before with the eyelets.

The photo isn't very good, but you can see the 2x4 and the pipes.  I cover the top of my tree with a plastic cup "rose" with 25 rgb led's.

I have winds up to 60 miles/Hr up here in the winter...never had a problem with the Mega trees.

Thanks Scuba.   I was trying to save a few bucks using the 1/2" plastic EMT ($1.35/10' section PVC vs ~$2.40/10' section metal, *40 adds up...)

My first (and not very practical) thought was - fill them with concrete.

It takes some help but this is a 25' tree using 1/2" sched 40 pvc.  Tee\s on either end to anchor and hoist up a 2" galvanized pipe. Took a strong windstorm and only 3 legs came loose at the bottom.

We added 16" to the height this year to take some of the swag out and a bigger star.  Used the same 1/2 pvc on a 12' tree and it is straighter and has better resolution. The 25' probably would be better with 48 legs vs. the 32 it has now.

Seriously......I think all of us are a little bit height envious...The first 100' mega tree wins!!!

That is too funny.   I think James70817 might have the tallest one....  I think it is 35' or so....
