Modify group of selected effects
« on: October 31, 2015, 10:48:42 AM »
Hi all, I believe this is my first post here.

Even though it's a enhancement request, I love and appreciate all the xl/nc team is doing! After years of using multiple sequencers and piecing them all together in xlights, the v4 has really become my one stop shop. And it has reduced my programming time significantly.

I would love the ability to select several effects that are the same, then adjust effect settings that changes all of the selected effects.

Example:

Four strands of RGB that are not grouped together are set as color green.
Select the four strands, then change color from green to red.
Currently, each effect must be changed one by one.

That option is already there. You have to hit the update button for the changes to be pushed to all selected effects.

This request is *almost* like a feature that I'd like to see.

I'm not sure if this has been requested yet, but this enhancement would save me a LOT of time...

I would love the ability to select several DIFFERENT effects, then adjust 1 particular setting they all have in common, without changing any other settings.

For example:

5 chases that go LEFT/RIGHT, and are GREEN
5 chases that go RIGHT/LEFT, and are RED

I'd like to change the color for all 10 of these to BLUE, but I do NOT want to change the direction, or any other settings.

Currently if I select all 10 of these, change the color to BLUE, and hit UPDATE, it will also change the DIRECTION (and other settings) for all 10 of these.

So in this example I'd end up with 10 chases that all go the same direction, which is not what I intended.

Does that make sense?  Is there perhaps a way to do this that I'm unaware of?

Could the UPDATE button's functionality possibly be changed to only apply settings that were modified?

Thanks to all involved for creating such an awesome sequencing program!  Keep up the good work!

u currently can select a block of effects (drag a box around them or shift click a block)  or select individual effects (ctl-click a group that is not contiguous) you can then set a color palette and then click update and all the selected effects will be set to that color.

a color palette change is the only thing that we have that can be pushed to multiple effects

Hi Sean!  Thanks for the response.

Yes, I can currently select a block and change the color just fine.  The problem occurs when the selected block contains effects with different properties.

For instance, in one of my sequences I have alternating chases on my eaves.  One effect chases LEFT, and the next one chases RIGHT.  These repeat for several seconds, in an alternating pattern.

I can select ALL of the chases, change the color & press UPDATE.  The color changes as intended.  But this also causes all of the selected effects to "inherit" the properties of the last item in the block that I selected.  Is this perhaps a bug?

So in this example, if the last effect I selected chases RIGHT, then ALL of the selected effects will chase RIGHT after I click UPDATE, and my alternating pattern will no longer alternate!   :'(

I've been bitten by this many times while sequencing.  Now I know how to avoid it from happening (by only selecting effects with the same properties), but it's very time-consuming in situations such as my "alternating" example above.

Am I the only one that's experiencing this?

Thanks!   ;)

It's not a bug, it's just the way it works in v4.

I was surprised to read that Sean said you can change colors on multiple effects. I preach that you can, but will have all the effects change as you have experienced.

The only way to change colors is to hit the UPDATE settings button on the effect settings box and that is what changes all the effects to be the same.

Just started my first show tonight using Xlights / FPP & everything is mostly working great!  The kids loved it!  Thank you Xlights!

However, I discovered an issue with my sequencing that's going to take HOURS to fix due to the behavior I described above.

A LOT of my non-RGB models (LED strings) were flashing & pulsating during the show.  I discovered that I accidentally have the SPARKLE setting turned to 65.  :o  Doh!

So now I need to modify HUNDREDS of effects & set the SPARKLE setting to zero.  These effects all have varying colors, start/end intensities, etc....

It would be great (hint hint) if I could simply select all the effects that need changing, set the sparkle to zero & press UPDATE!  BOOM!  DONE!  ...just sayin'!   ;)

Just a thought.  I looked at one of my sequences xml file using notepad++.  Searching for the word sparkle showed me this entry of C_SLIDER_SparkleFrequency=29  If you use notepad++  you can search for C_SLIDER_SparkleFrequency=65 and then do a replace with C_SLIDER_SparkleFrequency=0.  Try this on one sequence first to see how if goes, because then you could just delete the fseq file open the sequence do a save and be done.  That is a pretty fast process.

AS ALWAYS BACKUP FIRST OR MAKE COPIES WITH V2 ADDED TO THE NAME.

That used to be the case but Dan added an Update button to the Color Panel so now you can update the colors only for all the selected effects if you use that button.

The Color Update Button is the greatest.  I was taking hours changing colors for snippits of effects... Awesome Job !!!!.  Thanks again !!!!!
