how to create single-strand roof peak?
« on: November 16, 2015, 06:18:43 PM »
This is probably very smple, but I can't seem to find the obvious solution. :-[

I have several roof peaks that are outlined with pixel strings.  Pretty common I would think.  ::)
From the road, facing the house, the peaks are shaped like an upside-down V .
I have one continuous string that starts on the bottom left, goes up at an angle to the peak, and then continues down at an angle to the lower right.

The drawing tools in Layout don't seem to let me draw this as one string.  I can draw it as two strings, but its not two strings, its one continuous string with the middle of the string at the peak.

How do I create this as one model?  I realize  I could and break it into two half-strings and then put them in a group model.  But I would think this is a common element (roof peaks) in many layouts so I'm hoping there is a way to do this as a single model and not a group.

I used the custom model to do my peaks like that...works very well

I have this same thing.  I create two models to draw the strings and a 3rd model that's s single line to sequence them. If you want an effect that moves across it as one line then use the proxy model.  If you want an area effect that takes into account the position on the house then you need to use them in a group.  I don't like custom models because then it becomes a matrix with height and I like to sequence mine as if it's a straight line.

Never thought about creating the 3rd model...I like that idea Gil

both are good ideas, thanks guys!

But I'm surprized we have to trick it for what seems like a very common element.  ??? Sounds like maybe a good enhancement request?   ;D

I know "Circle" was just recently added as a new model display type.  How about a "Peak" display type?  Or, hmmm, now that I think about it I wonder if I try to make it a single-string tree with two strands.... hmm.... ::)

A multi model approach works great with many things.  I have 4 separate eaves and need to show them as such so there are 4 model, but I usually sequence using a 5th model that is one long line with the same channel numbers.  I have 6 porch columns which are 4 or 5 ft apart.  They are 6 single strand models for display purposes, but they sequence best as a 6 columns by 23 row matrix model which is not displayed.  There are other situations where a multi model approach works and is fast and easy to implement.  No need to add more programming.

Being able to draw a continuous line with angles and turns would be nice.

Custom display is what I did last year, but this year I did two lines and grouped together. The challenge with custom lines or a model is figuring out the angle. Using Excel and copying pasting is one way to make custom models a bit less cumbersome.
