Windows 10 Crashing w/ XL4
« on: November 23, 2015, 12:29:36 AM »
Hi guys I am new to sequencing and decided to try XL4 since its free. I however cant get anywhere with software as it crashes every time I open the "Layout" tab. Is there any other supported software I need? I looked in the instruction and already downloaded and installed Audacity. I also tried using older versions of XL4 and even XL3  to no avail. The crash happens with every version XL on Windows 10 Home Edition :(. Any suggestion or help would be appreciated.

Right click on the xL4 exe file and under Properties select Compatibility. Try Windows 7 as an option. This may help.

When XL crashes, is it giving you a file with crash info? If so, post it here. Windows 10 has been stable for XL.

Thanks for the responses guys :). Was not expecting to get so many replies. An update on the issue though.

Troubleshooting Performed
1) I did not see a crash report, is that something that automatically pops up? I did not see any readme files labeled anything obviest like "Crash Report" in the  installation directory.
2) I tried the suggestion of running in windows 7 compatibility mode and it did not work.
3) Tried installing the Vamp plugin by placing those three files found in the unzipped folder in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Vamp Plugins" like the instructions said. This did not work either. I have never installed anything this way before, is this really the way its installed?

Symptoms Noticed
1) Application crashes when opening "Layout" tab. (Freezes and doesn't allow anything else open)
2) Application crashed when opening "Sequencer" tab.  (Freezes and doesn't allow anything else open)
3) When selecting the quick select "Models" button at the top in the hotbar does nothing. (Is  this just not working yet for everyone? I realize this program is one those ever developing apps)
4) When uninstalling XL4 or Audacity my computer would briefly emit loud static. It happened at various other times and cant remember when exactly. This computer has a fresh install of windows 10 and seems to run everything else perfectly fine.

Questions
1) Is Vamp or Audacity absolutely necessary to install XL4? I saw a video of Sean installing XL3 and he did not install either of these.
2) Is there any other free software like XL?

Again any help would be appreciated. I will try any troublshooting suggestion or if needed I can provide any related info.

Gilrock, I rather take the bus.

Thanks

Vamp plugins were created for Audacity so they weren't anything we created we just utilize them.  So yes that's how they get installed.  Do you need them?  Not really but you will probably want them eventually.  It allows you to automatically analyze a song to create timings that match the beats.

I'm one of the main developers and like I said I'm using Windows 10 and I develop the program on Windows 10.  I haven't heard of anyone besides you having these problems described.

Have you done anything on the Setup tab?  That's the place to start.  Select your Show directory and make sure its a directory you can write to.  Don't select somewhere in Program Files cause that needs administrator access.  Next you need to define some channels in the network setup on the Setup tab.  You can easily just create a bunch of E1.31 universes or create a big Null output if you're not sure what you need.  That will allow you to create models and map them to channel numbers.

We have a big user manual available on the same page where you get the releases.

If you have any way to capture a video of what's happening that would help.  Unfortunately I'll be packing tomorrow to leave for a week going hunting and camping but there are a lot of others around here that can help.  Screenshots and/or videos of what you're doing makes it easier to pinpoint things.  It definitely shouldn't be freezing.  If it's because you didn't define any networks then maybe that's something we need to fix.

Layout and Sequencer tabs are the two tabs that would be creating and initializing OpenGL panels when you flip to them.   Thus, this kind of sounds like a video card/driver issue.   I would suggest grabbing the latest video drivers for your card directly from the manufacturer (NVidia/AMD) and seeing if that helps.

I tried updating my drivers that were 3 months old and it solved my problem.
Thanks
