Power Supplies
« on: December 01, 2015, 12:05:15 PM »
Ok dumb question. I would think I would need to keep the power supplies connected to my Falcon V1 powered on 24/7. Is that what everyone does or can they be put on a timer.  I am stil lrunnig form a computer and will be using xlights for the first time this year.

Thanks

i use an automatic on/off timer to have the power come on and off just for the show times.

I'm not sure if it's correct or not but I've always left my controllers on 24/7. I'm in the Northeast if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try a timer to start with and see how that goes. If I have problems I will switch to 24/7 mode.
Thanks again

The first year I had my controllers on 24/7 for the month and all was ok. But then several people over at Auschristmas suggested not a good idea, I think from the point of view of longevity of the power supplies and a safety point of view esp if using the cheaper Chinese power supplies (and this stuff we are doing is DIY so safety is really important). So now I turn them on and off each night (although as per another post, I am having RCD tripping problems now )
Perhaps someone more electrically qualified than me could comment though.

Been doing 24/7 for 8 years.  Never a problem.  Every time we had another step to the process we add more complexity, more time, more cost, more troubleshooting, etc, etc.  Just my opinoin, you can pick your own choice.  Based on what I have read over the years I would guess it is probable 75% or more go with 24/7.
