E.131 on multicast
« on: December 11, 2015, 06:22:18 PM »
My 16 channel pixel tree on e.131 is choking my home Internet completely . Should I configure as unicast instead of multicast.

I have 4 universes on multicast. Pls advice.

Thanks

Yes.   Unless you have a separate network for your show or you don't have Wifi anywhere, going unicast is your best bet.

So serious network guy here...  Your choices are pretty simple.
1.  Use Unicast.  As long as you have a good switch, it will isolate your traffic just to the device running the show and the devices running your lights.  Note that at my house, my 3 daughters running all their crap (lots of it broadcast) resulted in stops in my show.  So I had to choose 2.
2.  Create a show specific network.  I use a Falcon Pi Player.  I put the ethernet port from it and from all the San Devices 6804s on the 168.192.2.x network.  They are connected to a single switch which is isolated from everything else.  ON the Falcon Pi, I installed the wireless.  It is on the 192.168.1.x network (my home network).  So now, I can get to the Falcon Pi on the 1.x network to download things.  It then runs the 2.x network isolated for my show.  My daughter's traffic doesn't interfere.

Make sense?

Thanks. Do I just go to e.131 portal and select unicast. Is it as simple as that. I run my show from a laptop. Is there a tutorial on this or instructions.

Yes - the ip address that you specify must be the ip address of your controller (sorry if that was obvious) . The controller ip address should be set to static (if there is a choice of static or DHCP) , so that it does not change.
